13 reasons why

It was announced on Sunday that the hit Netflix show 13 Reasons Why has been renewed for a second season! The show was based on the book by Jay Asher and followed it pretty closely. Since there is only one book and the show covered pretty much all of it, there was speculation that it would only be a one season show, but it had such great reviews and was even said to be the most watched Netflix show in history, so it’s kind of a no-brainer that it would return. Luckily, the season finale ended with some major cliffhangers that absolutely need to be solved. I myself have been quietly hoping for a second season because I loved it so much, but I’ll admit, I’ve been a bit skeptical how they’ll do it. But, I’m all in because I fell in love with all of the characters.

If you haven’t seen the show or read the book, here’s a quick little synopsis of the story. Don’t worry, no major spoilers: The story is narrated by high school student Hannah Baker who has committed suicide and leaves behind a box of cassette tapes with the 13 reasons Why she’s no longer here for a list she’s made of kids she goes to school with to listen to. She goes on to explain to each of them how they are involved with her wanting to take her life. Each person on the list is supposed to listen to the tapes and then pass them on to the next, and if this isn’t done, someone who has a copy of them will release them. Dark secrets are revealed and it takes an emotional toll on everyone at the school who is involved, especially Clay Jensen, who liked Hannah more than just a friend and who never got the chance to tell her how he really felt. He thinks that if he only would’ve just told her, or that if people had been more kind to her then she would still be around. The moral of the story? Be kind to everyone because you never know what they’re going through and words can hurt more than you think.

If you plan on watching the show, I suggest reading the book as well because there are some differences. It will be interesting to see where it goes now that all the secrets are out in the open and how everyone will be affected and where they will go from here. Overall the show was fantastic and I was very impressed and am looking forward to season 2 which will be streaming on Netflix sometime in 2018.
