2015 USC Trojans Season Preview
HC: Steve Sarkisian
2014 Record: 9-4 (6-3 Pac-12)
Key Losses: DL Leonard Williams, WR Nelson Agholor, RB Buck Allen, LB Hayes Pullard, CB Josh Shaw, TE Randall Telfer
Key Games: 9/26 at#15 AZ State, 10/17 at #11 Notre Dame, 11/21 at #7 Oregon, 11/28 #13 UCLA
Upset to watch: 11/13 at Colorado–HC Mike MacIntyre has an under-the-radar team with a dynamic offense that should compete for a bowl appearance for the first time in years.
Offense: With QB Cody Kessler returning for his senior season, the Trojans are guaranteed of a steady presence behind center, even with the losses of Agholor and Allen as skill players. USC always recruits well and has plenty of serious athletes ready to step in to the lineup, one player to watch is WR Steven Mitchell who only caught eight passes last season, but has the talent to be a better overall player than Agholor who was a first round pick. With Kessler as a dark-horse Heisman candidate, the Trojans offense will be electric as usual.
Defense: The Trojans defense can be even better than their offense with stars like LB Su’a Cravens and CB Adore’e Jackson returning, but replacing top-10 draft pick DE Leonard Williams will be a tall task. Last season, USC was ranked fifth in the Pac-12 in scoring and total defense but allowed more than 400 yards per game which must improve to be a serious College Playoff contender.
Outlook: The Trojans face tough road games heading to #15 Arizona State, #11 Notre Dame and #7 Oregon, but play a light non-conference schedule making the Pac-12 schedule a priority as usual. After two top-10 recruiting classes, including last year’s number two class, Sarkisian has the talent to make a run at the Pac-12 title and earn a berth in the College Football Playoff, but will the pressure be too much to return SoCal’s team to glory?
Prediction: 10-2 (8-1 Pac-12 South) Regular Season Champs
