AAC 2016 bracket

2016 American Athletic Conference Tournament | March 10th-13th | Amway Center | Orlando, FL

Thursday, March 10th–

#9 South Florida vs #8 East Carolina- This will be an ugly contest. Who knows? South Florida beat the Pirates by 17 in East Carolina, but dropped the home contest 52-39. I’m going with a slight upset in this one as McMurray, Nunez, and Cousins pick up their 8th and final win on the year. Winner-South Florida

#10 Tulane vs #7 UCF- The Knights won both contests this year against the Green Wave by 8. Tulane has 2 road wins all year and that was against South Florida and East Carolina. Winner-UCF

Friday, March 11th–

#9 South Florida vs #1 Temple- Temple won the two regular season meetings by 7 and 12. Temple has won 9 of their last 11 and one of those losses was to #1 Villanova. No upset here. Winner-Temple

#5 UConn vs #4 Cincinnati- Cincinnati beat the Huskies by 1, and by 5 in the two regular season meetings. Amida Brimah did not play in one of those meetings. Hard to beat a conference foe three times in one season. Cincinnati will not. Purvis, Gibbs, Hamilton, Brimah, and crew, find a way to get it done. This is what UConn does, win in March. Winner-UConn

#7 UCF vs #2 Houston- Don’t look now but the Houston Cougars are a good basketball team. Kelvin Sampson’s Cougars have their best record since they were part of the SWC. They hammered UCF in both regular season meetings by 20+. No need spilling good content breaking down this one. Winner-Houston

#6 Memphis vs #3 Tulsa- Tulsa has won 4 of their last 5. The only loss in that time was a home loss to Memphis by 10. Tulsa does however have a few things on their side that Memphis does not. Number one is quality wins. Number two is a ton of seniors. Number three, they are playing for an at-large NCAA Tournament birth. Frank Haith’s squad will find a way to outlast Memphis. Winner-Tulsa

Saturday, March 12th–

#5 UConn vs #1 Temple- Temple beat UConn in both regular season meetings. The first time it took a Josh Brown jumper with 2.5 seconds left to knock off the Huskies. In the second meeting it took a 21-4 run to give the Owls a 5 point win. Again, hard to beat a conference foe three times in one season. See previous statement about UConn in March. Kevin Ollie’s team pulls off the upset of the #1 seed and advances to the championship game. Winner-UConn

#3 Tulsa vs #2 Houston- These two teams took turns beating each other by double digits this year. Tulsa has the better resume by a slight margin, but I feel like Houston is playing slightly better at this point. Houston is 1st in the league in scoring and 2nd in field goal percentage behind SMU, who is not eligible for post-season play. They have great shooters, experience, and a really good coach. Cougars could be looking at their first NCAA Tournament birth since 2010. Winner-Houston

Championship Game-Sunday, March 13th–

#5 UConn vs #2 Houston- If this does turn out to be the championship game, it will be a good one. The two took turns picking up road wins over each other. Both teams are at the top of the league in field goal percentage, free-throws, and three-pointers. Two great coaches going at it as well. Kevin vs Kelvin. I think Houston is the team poised to make a run in the tournament this year, and UConn eventually has to run out of that magic. Right? I am going with the Houston Cougars to cut down the 2016 American Athletic Conference net.

2016 AAC Champion-Houston
