2017 Comic Book Movie Predictions
2017 Comic Book Movies
We all cannot wait for the 2017 Comic Book movie season to begin and luckily for fans that wait is only about nine more days. In nine days fans will flock to the theaters to see Hugh Jackman in Logan, in what is to be his final time playing Wolverine. The film was reviewed by critics and so far it has an outstanding 95% on RottenTomatoes. Some critics have said it is the best super hero film they have ever seen with a nice mix of comic book and old western movie themes. The film is tracking for around $60 million opening weekend but I think this number is way too low. Jackman’ previous film, The Wolverine, grossed $53.1 opening weekend back in 2013. With ticket prices going up and the notion that this could be the final time we see both Jackman and Stewart in an X-Men film will be more than enough incentive to drive this opening weekend above $60 million and I see Logan topping Deadpool’s final numbers for an R rated film.
Logan opens in theaters on March 3rd, 2017
In May we get the rag tag ensemble sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, that took the Marvel world by surprise with its 2014 haul of over $773 million. This film looks to be bigger and loaded with more action and laughs that made it a huge success. The focus of this film seems to lean more on Baby Groot especially when it comes to marketing. Though its hard not to find the little fella quite cute. I look for this movie to be another huge success for Marvel Studios and the May slot should really help boost its overall numbers. Look for this one to cross the $1 billion mark with ease.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opens in theaters on May 5th, 2017
In what is one of my most anticipated films of 2017 and a film I know a lot of people are looking forward to – Wonder Woman – is the first female led comic book film. Gal Gadot was a huge question mark when hired for Wonder Woman but her small role in Batman v Superman had a huge impact and won many over that she was the right choice for job. I love the hire and the more I think about this film and see the marketing under way it just gets me hyped. Although I love all three films the DCEU has produced so far, the films have not been well received by critics but I think that will all change with Wonder Woman. I think Wonder Woman will get the DCEU back on track with critics and the hard work director Patty Jenkins and Gal Gadot have put in will be greatly appreciated by fans and critics. Wonder Woman does come out in a crowded month and will need a strong opening weekend to be successful in the following weeks. I think women will love the movie and this will help drive it past Suicide Squad’s final number and might even come close to topping Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. I predict opening weekend of $90 million and final total of $780 million.
Wonder Woman opens in theaters on June 2nd, 2017
The month of July sees the co-partnership of Marvel Studios and Sony’s Spider-Man swing into theaters. Tom Holland took over the role from Andrew Garfield after the disaster that was Amazing Spider-Man 2. Holland debuted as the wall crawler in the 2016 sequel Captain America: Civil War and was an instant hit with most fans. I actually think Holland and Chadwick Boseman (Black Panther) made the film as good as it was. Spider-Man: Homecoming will feature Michael Keaton (Batman) as the lead villain, The Vulture. The film will also have an additional 3 villains including the Shocker and the Tinkerer. The film boasts a huge cast including Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man/Tony Stark. Why hasn’t Sony learned that crammed Spider-Man films do not work. Spider-Man 3 and Amazing Spider-Man 2 were the worst and it was due to so many characters crammed into one movie. I think this will be a huge knock on the film and could hurt repeat viewings but it will a success for both studios. Holland is well received as Spider-Man/Peter Parker and you have the star power of Robert Downey Jr. to bring people to see it as well. Also we might be seeing Iron Man debut a new suit in this film. I think Spider-Man will have a nice opening weekend of around $95-110 million and finish somewhere in the $775-850 million dollar range.
Spider-Man: Homecoming swings into theaters on July 7th, 2017
It is a huge year for Marvel no doubt, they have 4 movies overall and the final film to open in 2017 is Thor: Ragnarok. The Thor franchise has hauled in almost $1.1 billion but it has not been the huge draw like the other Marvel films. I think with a November release date and the addition of the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) that will change. The film boasts a great cast with lead villain Hela being played by Cate Blanchett with Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Loki. We also get a nice cameo from Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch). This will be the second to last Marvel film leading up to next years Infinity War and will for sure have some huge implications for that movie. Thor 2 opened with over $85 million and I think Thor: Raganrok will exceed that but only slightly. I am predicting an opening weekend of $89 million and a final haul of $750 million.
Thor: Ragnarok hammers its way into theaters on November 3rd, 2017
The last and quite frankly my most anticipated film of 2017 is DC’s superhero ensemble, Justice League. This film could make or break the DCEU and its established universe. I think Wonder Woman will do fine and even if it doesn’t and Justice League does well then I fell the DCEU will continue strong. This will be Zack Snyder’s third time behind the camera and his last outing did not go over well with critics. With current rumors circling that Ben Affleck (Batman) wants out as Batman, the success of Justice League could determine whether or not we see him come back. I think the film needs to be somewhat of a hit with critics but the film needs to cross the one billion mark in my opinion. Batman v Superman came close but with the addition of Flash, Cyborg, and Aquaman the film should cross it no problem. The film opens in November with minimal competition and should do well overall. I think both Wonder Woman and Justice League will perform well at the box-office but I think Wonder Woman will be better received by critics. The critics just seem to not really care for Snyder’s style and I think that will roll over to Justice League. I think Justice League has a huge opening weekend though and breaks the record set by Hunger Games: Catching Fire. I predict an opening weekend of $185 million and a final total of $1.2 billion.
Justice League flies into theaters on November 17th, 2017
