3 Cases: IC Title Match at Wrestlemania
The Intercontinental Championship match was announced this past Monday on RAW and it’ll pit the current champion, The Miz, in a triple threat match against Seth Rollins and Finn Balor. All three competitors have a case for winning this match so let’s break it down by each superstar.
1. Seth Rollins – Grand Slam Champion
Seth Rollins has undoubtedly been one of the top superstars on RAW over the past couple of years. When he was randomly teamed up with Jason Jordan after Dean Ambrose was injured, it looked like he was heading toward a Wrestlemania matchup against Jordan. And then once Jordan got injured, a new door opened for Seth Rollins – the one title that has eluded him his entire career, the Intercontinental Championship. Surprisingly enough, he is the only member of The Shield that is not a Grand Slam Champion. This could all change with a win on the grandest stage of them all. With rumors of Rollins feuding with whoever comes out of the Brock Lesnar/Roman Reigns Universal Championship match, that could put a damper on hopes of him as Intercontinental Champion. But as always, plans do change with WWE booking so don’t count him out just yet!
2. Finn Balor – A Fresh Start
If anyone has needed a fresh start it’s got to be Finn Balor. Due to his unfortunate injury that caused him to relinquish the Universal Championship, Balor hasn’t really been able to bounce back into anything particularly relevant since his return. The only feud he’s really had was his with Bray Wyatt, which feels like it just fell flat. The one good thing that has happened is that he’s rekindled his friendship with the Good Brothers, Gallows & Anderson, and have kind of reformed the Balor Club. Balor is a fantastic competitor in the ring and completely over with the fans, so why hasn’t he gotten a shot at the title he technically never lost?! Ask Vince McMahon because I’m wondering the same thing. Anyway, having a run with the Intercontinental Championship would certainly benefit Balor’s character and help boost him back into the Universal Title picture right after that.
3. The Miz – Longest Combined IC Title Reign
There’s no doubt that The Miz has been one of the top players on RAW. With the Universal Champion, Brock Lesnar, being only part-time and having limited appearances, the Intercontinental Championship has had to be a focal part of RAW every Monday and The Miz has been a great choice to carry the title. Since winning the title for the 8th time (only one shy of Chris Jericho’s 9 reigns) at RAW25, The Miz has slowly closed in on Pedro Morales’ 619 combined days as champion. The Miz is now around 50 days away from breaking the record and Wrestlemania is 32 days away from today. IF The Miz can escape Wrestlemania with a huge win over two great competitors in Rollins and Balor, there’s no doubt that The Miz will easily shatter that record. The one thing that could hold this back is Maryse’s pregnancy. The Miz will definitely take some time off to enjoy the birth of his first child so it’s a matter of when that happens on whether or not he will retain at Wrestlemania. One thing is for sure though – if he does lose or does not participate at Wrestlemania due to the birth of his first child, it’ll only be a matter of time before he ties AND breaks Chris Jericho’s 9 title reigns, and easily surpasses Pedro Morales on total days as Intercontinental Champion.
No matter what ends up happening at Wrestlemania, there is no doubt in my mind that this match has the potential to totally steal the show and take match of the night honors. With all three superstars having a case for winning the match, I’m really pumped for this one and am having a hard time picking a winner. That makes it that much more exciting!
