Four Dangerous Playoff Contenders

Playoff Contenders

The NFL playoffs are getting closer, and teams are starting to pull ahead within their division. I think 4 teams are guaranteed to make the playoffs and I’m going to tell you who. The AFC West is looking like the strongest division and things are getting real tight. The Chiefs, Raiders, and Broncos are tightly contested with their records. You can’t count the Chargers out either because they can get hot.

I’ll start off with the Oakland Raiders. They’re 7-2 and just earned a tough victory over Denver. They are currently the #2 seed in the AFC behind the Patriots. Derek Carr is playing lights out, and is a legitimate MVP candidate. These are not the same Raiders that we are used to seeing the past 10 years. I give credit to Jack Del Rio, and an offense that is ranked 4th in rushing and 5th in passing. They put up 27.2 points a game, 5th best in the league. I know they say defense win games but there is nothing wrong with having an elite offense. Their defense does give up points, but they are young and will only get better. They do have a tough fight with their division, but I think they’ll pull it out. Look out for this young team they’re clicking on all cylinders.

My third toughest is the Dallas Cowboys , and a team you don’t want see if they make the playoffs. I’m amazed and surprised at how Dak has been playing this year. He has led the Cowboys to a 7-1 record, and currently the #1 seed for the NFC. The 4th round draft pick came in after Tony Romo was hurt in the preseason and who’s to say he has taken over as the starting Dallas QB. The offense is currently ranked 1st in rushing average with 165.2 yards a game. They have a bulky offensive line with a rookie running back playing lights out. Ezekiel Elliot currently has 891 rushing yards with 7 touchdowns. He is playing like an experienced player and might see a trip to the Pro Bowl. Let’s not forget about this tough defense, who only gives up 17.5 points a game which is 5th best in the NFL. The NFC East is looking like a dog fight too with all 4 teams capable of winning it.  I think the Cowboys will do it though because they have a complete team. Watch out for Dak and Ezekiel because these rookies are thinking Super Bowl. The question is though will Tony Romo come back this season and lead his team the rest of the way? This will be a hard decision for the coaching staff, but I think they can win with both players.

The Atlanta Falcons are for real and they will not sink this year. They are 6-3 and currently the #2 seed in the NFC. They destroyed the Buccaneers on Thursday night, and are currently 3-1 in their division. This offense is very scary and will put points on the board fast. They’re so scary that they sometimes put up points without the best receiver in the league ( Julio Jones) doing anything. I think Taylor Gabriel, Mohammed Sanu, Aldrick Robinson, and Levine Toilolo deserve credit for the offense as well. They are 1st in points at 33.9 a game and averaging 315.2 passing yards a game. The rushing is pretty stout as well averaging 114.2 yards per game, 10th best in the league. The Falcons and the Raiders have a lot of similarities. They both have strong offenses with a young defense that gives up a lot of points. This defense will eventually come together already passing their sack total from last year. I think these high-powered offenses can ride into the sunset with the way their playing. If they can put up 30 a game and a couple stops from the defenses, it will be hard to beat this team. Oh and let’s not forget about the MVP leading candidate, Matt Ryan. He is having a career year with 23 passing TDs and 4 interceptions. He also has an 119.0 QB rating and currently my vote for MVP. I just think Matty Ryan should make a bigger statement and get his team to the Super Bowl. He has had past playoff woes, but the time is now to show the world he’s an elite QB. He would earn a lot more respect and put in the same category as Brady, Rodgers, and Drew Brees. Okay well maybe not Tom Brady because he’s in a league by himself.

Speaking of Tom Brady, he’s back and the league is scared. The Patriots are the #1 team you don’t want to see come playoff time. Tom Brady is a MVP candidate with 12 touchdowns and no interceptions. They also have a good rushing attack averaging 116.4, 8th best in the league. The defense also looks good, which only gives up 16.5 points a game, which is 3rd best in the league. This is a complete team, and Tom Brady is back after a 4 game suspension. Their coach Bill Belichick is one of the best and this Patriots team is a Super Bowl contender for like the 15th year in a row. Can you even imagine the Patriots not winning? Yeah, I can’t either and neither can Brady. They will win their division again and I think earn the #1 seed in the AFC. The Raiders I think can challenge them, but I don’t see the Pats not winning the AFC. Tom Brady is already one of the greatest to ever play and Belichick to ever coach. Another win would maybe cement their legacy as best to ever win and coach!

Nine weeks are over and we just passed the halfway mark of the season. I think my predictions will remain true but things can get exciting. Things could change and some teams can regain control of their division (Broncos, Vikings and Eagles). Who’s to say some teams that started off bad (Saints, Chargers, and Redskins), will right the ship and make it to the playoffs. Let’s also not forget about those sleeper teams (Giants, Chiefs, Seahawks, Packers, and Lions.) These teams still have a chance and there is a long way to go in the season. This is a great year, and we can’t wait til playoff season to get here. Much love and good luck to your NFL teams!
