Frontier

Jason Mamoa is a badass, and nobody can tell me different. He’s a fan favorite actor across the globe, and he gets so much attention on social media it’s crazy. He’s surely going to give us one hell of an on-screen Aquaman, but right now our focus is Frontier.

Frontier, is a Netflix original show starring Mamoa. The series focuses on the fur trade in the Hudson Bay during the 1700s. Mamoa plays a ruthless fur trader by the name of Declan Harp. Declan Harp, half Englishman (Irish), half Native American (Cree), is the definition of a savage. According to his sister-in-law (Sokanon), Declan Harp wasn’t always the vicious, ruthless, savage man we come to know in the series. He once had a family, a wife and a son who were taken away by the show’s villain, Lord Benton.

Lord Benton is the man who made Declan Harp, and has sworn to take him out. The story centers around the fur trade, but is very complex. There are, of course, other companies in the fur trading business, but the main two are the Hudson Bay Company (HBC) and Declan Harp’s band of misfits. The other fur traders include The Brown Brothers, Curruthers and Company, Mr. Grant, and even the Ale house owner Ms. Emberly. Everyone wants to make friends/business partners out if the Lake Walkers (Natives), but they are not easily swoon or convinced to do business with everyone. Declan Harp is especially someone who rarely anyone wants to work with. Declan only wants one thing, for all of the independent companies to band together and work against Benton at all cost.

There’s also the sub-main characters. Micheal Smyth, an Irish boy who gets stuck on a ship to Fort James from England. Clenna Dolan, Micheal’s girlfriend. Sokanon, Declan’s sister-in-law. Captain Chesterfield, Lord Benton’s right hand man, who’s secretly plotting against him. Mary and Imogen, girls that work at Grace Emberly’s Ale house. All of these characters contribute to the true makeup of the show. Micheal Smyth probably has the greatest arc of all of the characters, besides Harp. Micheal Smyth starts off the show as Harp’s enemy, and well slowly becomes his protégé. Micheal Smyth is also faced with many challenges, one being choosing between the love of his life or Sokanon. Sokanon, is the woman he needs. Clenna, is the woman he loves. There is also the fight for power over Fort James. As I said before, Chesterfield is plotting against Benton who takes over the town as Governor as soon as he arrives. Chesterfield wants to become Governor, but Benton stands in his way. Chesterfield also stirs up his own bits of drama. The heads over at the HBC in England send a ship of soldiers to Canada to check Benton, and it starts to turn Chesterfield into a madman.

The sub-plots to the show also add-on to making the show a hell of a masterpiece. This story of power, love, greed, and revenge is one that we see often. We have never seen the story told quite like this though. This story is simply amazing, and I cannot wait for Netflix to give us more seasons. The season finale of season one leaves you with many questions. One can only ponder where Declan and his band of misfits will wind up in seasons to come.
