Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “BOOM” Recap and Review
Previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Patton Oswalt returned to play Agent Koenig and his siblings, we met his older sister who was also an S.H.I.E.L.D. agent (played by Artemis Pebdani) and witnessed a Philinda kiss. The team also discovered LMD May and lost the Darkhold. It was also revealed that Radcliffe is working with a Russian who wants Coulson dead. This week, the team had to deal with not only searching for Radcliffe but the Watch Dogs and the mysterious Russian. Here’s what went down on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode 14, entitled “BOOM”.
Mack & Coulson
While the rest of the team remained stateside, Mack and Coulson went on the hunt for Holden Radcliffe. Instead of finding the scientist they found the woman he modeled AIDA after. Her name is Agnes and it turned out that she is Radcliffe’s ex-girlfriend who has an inoperable brain tumor. This explained Radcliffe’s obsession with research surrounding the human condition and saving lives. She claimed to want nothing to do with Radcliffe or anything involving him. Mack and Coulson used the fact that Radcliffe kidnapped May to convince her to work with them to lure the scientist out of hiding.
With a listening device planted so Mack and Coulson can hear everything that is said, Agnes sat in a cafe and waited for him. Instead of the doctor himself, a waiter drops off a cellphone. Over the phone, Radcliffe tells Agnes about the Framework, a creation of his own making that would allow her to never have to feel death. He explained that he already had one subject doing well inside.
Radcliffe pulled up in a car and before the S.H.I.E.L.D. duo could stop her, Agnes left with him. Radcliffe thought ahead and brought back up that rained gunfire on the pair to stop them from being followed. In the same lab where May is being held, Agnes’ consciousness was placed in the Framework and her body gave out shortly after.
Instead of being disappointed, Coulson made the connection that May was the other subject in the Framework.
Watch Dogs, Explosions, and Russians
Back on U.S. soil, Gemma revealed to Mace that continued use of the serum that gives him his super strength will be fatal. In D.C., Shockley, the Watch Dog member who works the closest with Senator Nadeer, showed up in her office on orders from The Superior. He broke a terrigen crystal with the hopes of forcing her to become Inhuman. Instead, he underwent terrigenesis right before an explosion destroyed the office.
Daisy believed the attack was a ploy by Nadeer to turn the public against Inhumans until Nadeer herself is confirmed to be one of the four people killed in the blast. S.H.I.E.L.D. went to investigate to try to keep the blame off of their organization. While they’re there, it is revealed that Shockley survived the explosion. His body returned to a solid state and he went back to a Watch Dog hideout. He reported to Anton Ivanov, the Russian who’s after Coulson. It turns out that Ivanov is The Superior.
When Daisy and a team of agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. track down Shockley, Ivanov is gone. In custody, the Watch Dog member refuses to talk to anyone except for Mace. Fitz and Simmons realize just in time that Shockley himself is the source of the explosion. He is able to turn his body into a gas-like state that causes him to explode. They barely arrived in time for Fitz and an unpowered Mace to shove the man into a containment cell before ejecting it from the plane.
Mace was upset that he wasn’t strong enough to deal with Shockley on his own, but the others reassured him that he doesn’t always have to be the heavy hitter. When Shockley reemerged on the ground he called Ivanov. He told his boss that even though he is now an Inhuman he will finish his mission. Soon after, he blew up a motel. The team realized that Daisy may be the only one able to stop Shockley from exploding by hitting him with vibration waves. After some failed testing of that theory, they went the explosion site. Shockley ended up just being a way for the Watch Dog to trap S.H.I.E.L.D. and capture Mace.
Instead of stopping the man from exploding, Daisy used her abilities to force him to repeatedly explode, hoping it would tire him out and slow his regeneration. While she did that Fitz and Simmons prepped a chamber that would hold Shockley’s gas-like state and Mace took an injection of the serum to hold back the Watch Dog reinforcements.
In the end, the new Inhuman, who may have been the canon character Nitro, is captured but Mace is taken by Ivanov.
Final thoughts on this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
“BOOM” was a pretty good episode. We got more of Radcliffe’s backstory, which was sad but didn’t gain any sympathy points for the scientist from me. The special effects used to show Shockley regenerating this week were amazing. The plot line for the Watch Dog member felt familiar; a baddie becoming what he hates and using it to hurt others like him even though everyone he works with now hates what he is. I’m not quite sure I understand Ivanov’s motive yet, so it will be interesting to see if they explain more of his backstory soon.
One thing I’m on the fence about is the Philinda pairing. In “BOOM”, Coulson says that Melinda is everything to him. While we’ve seen a close friendship over the seasons, their romance still feels new and not quite at the “you mean everything to me” stage. On another note, I’m looking forward to how the world reacts to Nadeer’s death and what Ivanov will do when he finds out that Mace isn’t an Inhuman.
What did you think of this week’s Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.? Give it a grade in the comments below. I’m giving it an A-.
