‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Recap and Review: “Past Life”
Last week on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the team survived Sinara and a gravity storm while Mack and Elena helped the humans on the Lighthouse survive another one of Kasius’ plans. This week kicked off with Kasius finding Sinara’s body and searching Zephyr One only to discover that the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. have snuck onto the base.
While Mack and Yo-Yo split up to go with Flint and Tess to find the team, Kasius kills a doctor for not being able to bring Sinara back to life. He continues to talk to her lifeless body, drawing curious glances.
When the Inhumans’ trainer, Tye, is hesitant to send untrained Inhumans to take on the team, Kasius forces him to swallow a substance called Odium that turns his eyes black and blinds him with rage.
Mack offers Flint a home with him and Yo-Yo back in their time before they meet up with Fitz and Jemma. Elsewhere in the base, Daisy, May, and Coulson free a group of Inhumans from Kree guards. Tye arrives in his enhanced state and Daisy is forced to kill him. While Tess goes with the other Inhumans, Yo-Yo continues to scout the base on her own.
As Kasius decides to take Odium, Yo-Yo discovers her doppelganger in a locked room. She’s shocked as she learns that she died when she tried to fight back. The Kree killed her, brought her back for her blood, and continued the cycle for years. “Elena” explains that they make it back to the past but the disaster still happens. She can’t give any advice on how to stop it.
The Kree find Enoch on Zephyr One and Deke volunteers to go back him up and secure the ship. He tells Daisy to try not to destroy the world when she goes back home. While Jemma works with Flint on his powers so he can restore the monolith, Yo-Yo and “Elena” continue to talk. When Daisy tries to stay behind, Coulson knocks her out with an Icer.
“Elena” reveals that Coulson is dying and the team has to let him die. Yo-Yo is unable to learn how to save him before “Elena” tells her that she needs to go because Kasius is coming. Outside the base, Flint gathers rocks and smashes several windows, sending Hek-Sel and the other Kree guards into space. When everyone but Yo-Yo meets at the rendezvous point, Mack goes off to find her while Flint begins reconstructing the monolith.
Mack finds “Elena” held captive by Kasius. Not knowing that she isn’t Yo-Yo, he demands her release and refuses to leave her. Kasius slices her throat and swallows the Odium, sending himself into an enhanced rage. While Mack and Kasius face off, Enoch and Deke realize that the Zephyr is too damaged to power the monolith. Enoch decides to sacrifice his battery to power the machine. The downside is that Deke will die in the explosion as well.
Before Kasius can kill Mack, Jemma arrives and forces a silencing device into this head. Mack uses this moment to grab his shotgun-ax and kill the Kree. Just as Jemma and Mack begin to mourn Yo-Yo, she runs into the room and comforts him. Downstairs, the monolith begins to power up while Mack, Yo-Yo, and Jemma run to make it in time. The others stand before the stone as Tess and Flint watch the blast from a ship outside of the base.
Final thoughts on this week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Just like the cast and writers said, the identity of the seer was definitely not one I saw coming. The way Kasius talked about the seer implied that she had the gift of foresight, instead of someone who had already lived through the moments. That was a smart move by the writers.
The plotline of Coulson dying seemed random until I remembered the deal he made with Ghost Rider in season four. His impending death is a plot we’ve seen before, but I’m interested in seeing how it will play out. I also can’t wait for Daisy to realize that she isn’t the destroyer of worlds. I’m looking forward to seeing the storyline now that they’re back in a more familiar territory on Earth. Bravo to Herny Simmons and Natalia Cordova-Buckley for their performances in this episode. RIP Enoch. And RIP Deke. You ended up being decent in the end.
I’m giving “Past Life” a 10/10.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays at 9 PM EST on ABC. New episodes won’t air until March 2nd.
