‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Recap and Review: “Principia”
With the government searching for them and riding both the happy and sad waves of Fitzsimmons wedding and Coulson’s devastating news, the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. began to move on their plan to stop the world from being destroyed on Friday’s episode.
Alex, also known as Werner Von Strucker has returned! We haven’t seen him since season three. After lashing out and stabbing his therapist with a pen at one facility, he’s moved to General Hale’s facility. He awakens there to an open cell and empty hallways. He comes across a breakroom and rushes to grab food and a knife.
He’s startled when Ruby walks in wearing headphones. She grabs food and ignores him. Later, Alex finds her training and recognizes a scar on her forehead. He explains that they used to play together as children. He puts the knife to her throat, demanding to see her mother.
It turns out that General Hale wants Alex for his memory abilities. His answer is no. She allows him to go back to his room and says that if he wants to leave tomorrow that he can. When he’s gone, Hale explains to Ruby that she needs to use any method necessary to gain Alex’s trust and get information.
Ruby goes into Alex’s room after he has a nightmare and reveals that her mother wants to use her to get to him. She gives him the option of working with her against her mother before leaving the room. In the end, he decides to stay and work with her.
At the Lighthouse, YoYo grows tired of being babied. Coulson tells her that Fitz will work on her prosthetics, but they have to get the supplies for it. She isn’t ecstatic about not being able to feel things and worries about how Mack will feel about dating someone with “robot parts”. Mack reassures her and they leave her to rest.
Later, Jemma comforts the woman after she falls after waking up and forgetting that she no longer has arms. YoYo struggled to maintain faith that they’ll change the future.
The Hunt for Gravitonium
With the hold on the breach slowly weakening and in need of materials for YoYo, the team heads out to look for more gravitonium. Their target: former Cybertech scientists. Daisy decides to go out with them, less nervous now that she doesn’t have her powers. Her hope was really to look after Coulson.
When they go after the man who signed the Cybertech scientists death certificates, it turns out that he and Mack know each other. The man, Anthony Caine, was Mack’s roommate at the S.H.I.E.L.D. academy before getting kicked out. Caine reveals that he worked on Hydra’s modern version of project Paperclip; giving those who worked for Hydra new identities.
Caine is baffled that Mack, a man who hated violence, turned into someone who carries a shotgun ax and is on the world’s most-wanted list with the other agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Later, Mack and Anthony find one of the scientists who tells them that the gravitonium transport meant to be taken to a facility sunk during a thunderstorm. Fitz and Jemma are initially unable to find the sunken goods.
Fitz was not happy about being left to babysit Deke. When he’s trying to figure out how to close the breach, Deke tries to get him to lighten up by playing catch. He throws around a few insults, calling Fitz a grumpy old man, which is funny given their relation that they still didn’t know about.
When Fitz gets annoyed, they argue before Deke storms away. On his own, Deke sees a fear apparition of his mother warning him to leave before she’s killed by a Kree. Deke kills the Kree just as Jemma runs into the room. Midway through a rant about Fitz, he realizes that the gravitonium didn’t sink, but ascended after being struck by lightning.
With coordinates from the newlyweds, the team finds the ship floating in the clouds. Mack, Daisy, and Coulson go aboard only to discover that someone has been there and most of the gravitonium is gone.
They find a softball-sized amount but get attacked by LMDs before they can leave. They’re able to fight them off and get off just before the gravity field disappears and the ship falls out of the sky.
Back on board, Mack and Anthony say farewell, with Anthony promising to look into the Deathlok program for anything that could help Coulson. Elsewhere, Deke overhears Jemma saying words of encouragement that echo something his mother said to him. He realizes that Jemma and Leo are his grandparents. Dazed, he fumbles his sentences around them.
In the final moments of the episode, Mack revealed that he brought back beers for YoYo and an LMD to be used to create her prosthetics.
Review of last week’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
It sucks to see YoYo struggling and the team still floundering on how to save Coulson, but the episode was balanced because I loved the scenes between Fitz and Deke and then with Fitz, Deke, and Jemma. I’m really interested in seeing how Deke behaves around his grandparents moving forward.
I’m not sure how I feel about Ruby because Dove has played her as someone who doesn’t wear her emotions on her sleeve. It’s hard to tell who she’s for and who she’s against, besides knowing that she doesn’t like her mother. On another note, I’m not excited about Alex being back. I kind of forgot that his character existed or that he even had powers.
I’m giving the episode an 8/10. Felt like a bit of a filler but still good.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. airs Fridays at 8 PM on ABC Network.
