Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. “World’s End” Recap and Review
Heading into last night’s finale, the team was in a tight spot with Yo-Yo and Mack in the Framework and a heartbroken and now Inhuman Aida plotting to end them. We also saw the return of Ghost Rider at the very end of the episode. Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four finale brought us great action, emotional performances, and a peek at what’s to come next season. The writers did a good job of bringing together all of the season’s storylines.
As Aida began to shut down the Framework, Daisy hacked in and sent Radcliffe a bunch of yo-yos as a sign that he needed to find Yo-Yo. He saved her and led her to Mack and S.H.I.E.L.D. In the real world, Fitz and Simmons walked on egg shells around each other while trying to discover a way to kill Aida. The former android had her hands full elsewhere as Robbie showed up for the Darkhold and destroyed several LMDs. She seemed to forget that she could feel pain until she’s burned by the Ghost Rider’s chain. When she doesn’t heal from the burn, Ivanov explained that because the Rider is a part the same darkness that Aida used to become human, she is susceptible to his flames.
In D.C., a hearing is held to investigate and discuss what should happen with S.H.I.E.L.D. While Coulson and the team are too busy to send a representative to the meeting, Ivanov and a second LMD tell Talbot and the others that the Darkhold is a weapon that has information on how to get rid of Inhumans. An LMD Daisy interrupted the meeting and shot Talbot in the head. The agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aren’t far behind, but by then security cameras have already captured the attack on camera and a room full of people have seen “Daisy” shoot Talbot, who still had a pulse when medical help arrived.
In the Framework, people and items went missing while Mack and the other agents try to gather everyone up and escape. Mack walked right by Yo-Yo, not recognizing her. She tried to remind him of who she was and what they had in the real world, but he isn’t convinced. Even when the road in front of them and the people around them vanish, Mack refused to leave Hope. When the reached a nearby house, Yo-Yo expressed her frustration that Mack will die if he doesn’t leave and that he was doing so much for “a girl who doesn’t even exist”. Unfortunately, Hope heard this.
Coulson decided to use the Darkhold to defeat Aida. When she arrived at the hideout, she stabbed Jemma to get revenge on Fitz for his rejection. After Jemma is shocked and collapsed it is revealed that she was an LMD of Jemma used as a distraction. Downstairs, Coulson used the Darkhold to take on the Ghost Rider. He used the Rider’s powers to destroy her in what was kind of a let down of a moment. It was definitely cool to see Coulson as the Rider, but the moment of Aida’s defeat wasn’t built up enough. It felt rushed.
As the Framework continued to disappear, Mack told Yo-Yo that he planned to stay in the Framework because the only person he cared about is there. Yo-Yo sat down beside the pair on the couch and told them that she staying because the only person she cared about was there too. Henry Simmons and Natalia Cordova-Buckley gave strong performances last night. The moment Hope vanished was easily one of the most emotional scenes of the season. Yo-Yo soon woke up on the zephyr followed by Mack, who took a little longer to wake up. In the last moments of the Framework, Radcliffe pours himself a glass of alcohol and makes a toast before disappearing.
With Aida gone Robbie opened his own portal and took the Darkhold and left hoping to find somewhere safe to put the mystical book. Even with the bad guy gone, Daisy is still wanted for shooting Talbot and the team for S.H.I.E.L.D.’s involvement in the creation of the LMDs. The team shared a meal together before being arrested. In the final moments of season four, we see Coulson opening the viewing window of his prison cell and getting a glimpse of space before leaving the room.
Final Thoughts on the season four finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
I was glad they didn’t wait until midway through or until the last few minutes to get Robbie in on all the action. The Quake and Ghost Rider team up scenes were awesome. Daisy has had some of the best fight choreography since getting her powers and the addition of the ghost rider just boosted this season. The special effects were nicely done. The show has really stepped their game up with the LMDs, Robbie’s transformations, and the use of mystical energy. “World’s End” had great performances all around. Season four has really shown that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has an all-star cast. From Henry Simmons and Natalia Cordova-Buckley to Iain De Caestecker and this season’s recurring cast members Gabriel Luna, John Hannah, and Mallory Jansen, the AOS team hit it out of the park.
What does season five have in store? With the team arrested and in an outer space facility, we’re clearly in for something brand new next season. A few fans were speculating the prison hinted at S.W.O.R.D. (Sentient World Observation and Response Department). In the Earth-616 universe, S.W.O.R.D. is an agency that focuses on counterterrorism and intelligence for extraterrestrial threats. It was once a subdivision of S.H.I.E.L.D. but that relationship struggled once Nick Fury became the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. If S.W.O.R.D. is the one housing the team, it looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of new faces next season.
I’m giving the season four finale of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. a 9/10. The effects and action were great and all of the storylines came together, but Aida’s defeat felt a little anti-climatic.
