Akrum Wadley Draft Profile

Akrum Wadley draft profile

Strengths:

  • Athletic
  • Light feet
  • Agile
  • Good lateral direction
  • Dangerous in the receiving game
  • Versatile
  • Decent pass protector when committed

Analysis: Akrum Wadley is an ultra-athletic running back. His feet are light and electric and he has the talent to elude sudden penetration into the backfield. He often finds yardage for himself with sudden jump-cuts, spin moves, and a variety of head and shoulder fakes that leave tacklers on the turf. Can get to top speed quickly after changing directions. Glider who can easily outpace would-be tacklers around the edge with his “go” gear. Flashes big-play potential through the air as well. In the Iowa offense, he has experience lining up in the slot and is a difficult cover for linebackers. When he is committed, he can be a solid protector of his quarterback in pass protection, it’s not always there however.

Weaknesses:

  • Thin lower half
  • Lacks frame of an every down back
  • Impatient at times
  • Route running
  • Pass protection commitment/effort

Analysis: Wadley’s athleticism is prevalent, but scouts wonder about his thin lower half and if he can sustain the abuse of the running back position. He was a three-down back with the Hawkeyes, but can he be one in the NFL? Time will tell. His vision and patience can be hit-or-miss. Makes plays that are in front of him but may not have the feel to anticipate developing rush tracks. Gets hung up in a state of stutter-steps and shakes if clearly defined point of entry isn’t there. Needs to do better job of committing once he gets to second level. Will run up the backs of blockers. Has narrow, upright base and is missing leg strength and contact balance to break tackles.¬†Route-running and consistency of effort in pass protection both need improvement.

What the scouts say:¬†“Great athlete but what is his value? He’s pretty dangerous as a pass catcher but I don’t know if you can trust him to protect your quarterback. He’s a skinny rotational running back with some juice. He’ll test great but I still don’t know if his value is higher than the third day.” – AFC regional scout
