Allen Lazard Draft Profile

Allen Lazard draft profile

Strengths:

  • Outstanding size with a frame that will be tough for quarterbacks to miss
  • Physical in every aspect
  • High football IQ
  • Tough guy who doesn’t mind working the middle of the field
  • Hands catcher who can pluck and tuck it quickly in traffic
  • Uses supreme focus and strong hands to thrive in contested catch situations
  • Decent hand fighter off the line of scrimmage when faced with handsy press cover corners
  • Has experience inside and outside
  • Uses elbows, shoulder, hips, and hands to shield defenders from the catch point
  • Shows an ability to latch and finish as a run blocker on the perimeter

Analysis: Allen Lazard has been a productive, four-year player who relies on his size and strength to muscle Big 12 cornerbacks around when making the contested catch. Lazard is your prototypical possession receiver. He is intelligent and understands his responsibilities and duties on and off the football field. Lazard can impact the game all over the field–he is comfortable going over the middle and is not afraid of contact or hits that are coming his way. He catches the ball with his hands not his body and can pluck it away over cornerbacks. Great ball skills. Put on his tape from the 2017 Liberty Bowl against Memphis and watch Lazard go off showing his true potential in the NFL. Willing run blocker on the outside can help pace running backs down the sideline.

Weaknesses:

  • Lacks explosiveness as an athlete
  • Doesn’t have explosive speed
  • Doesn’t have the speed to force cornerbacks into an early retreat at any point
  • Unlikely to uncover against tight man coverage on the next level
  • Very little threat with the ball in his hands
  • Cornerbacks with recovery speed might be able to squat on possession routes
  • May need to be moved around and played in bunch formations to help create clean releases

Analysis: Allen Lazard does a lot of things very well on the football field, but he is just an average athlete and doesn’t possess to the explosiveness you look for in a high draft pick. Once the ball is in his hands he does not frighten defenses with his ability after the catch. He doesn’t have the breakaway speed to beat man coverage in the NFL and will have to make a living winning 50-50 balls against tight coverage. Cornerbacks with recovery speed might be able to squat on possession routes. He can play all over the field and will need to in order to create mismatches on the field.
