For many young adults, the Triple Crown in horse racing is a myth. Something you are aware has happened in the past, but cannot relate to just how special it is because you’ve never seen it. The last horse to accomplish this feat was Affirmed on June 10th, 1978. I was 10 days old.

There were three Triple Crown winners in the 70’s…Secretariat in 1973, Seattle Slew in 1977 and of course Affirmed in 1978. Before Secretariat won it in 1973, there was a 25 year drought since the last Triple Crown winner Citation in 1948. Three times in history there has been two Triple Crown winners in a three-year period. Only once has there been back-to-back Triple Crown winners, 1977 and 1978. So maybe those back-to-back winners were history’s way of saying you better enjoy this incredible feat because you’re not going to see it again for a long time. Thirty seven years to be exact. And that is if American Pharoah can pull it off tomorrow in the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes.

So we wait until tomorrow at roughly 6:50 pm ET to see if a long awaited history will once again be made on the mile-and-a-half track in New York. There are only eight horses competing in this years Belmont Stakes so that increases the chances that American Pharoah can take the crown. American Pharoah is also the heavy favorite in the race coming in at 3-5 odds. We have had Triple Crown hopefuls in three of the last four years, but this one feels special. I myself am rooting for history and believe that this will be the year. Although I was alive the last time there was a Triple Crown winner, I can’t say that I remember it since I was only 10 days old. So I can truly say, like many other young adults and horse racing fans, that I have been waiting for a lifetime for American Pharoah.
