Arrow ‘Checkmate’ Review and Recap
I haven’t been this excited or hyped after an episode of Arrow since season 2, this episode solidified Prometheus as just as good a villain as Slade and by the end of the season, he may be a better one. Spoilers for Arrow from this point on.
In the last episode Prometheus was revealed to be Adrian Chase and while that reveal was probably incredibly obvious to anyone who isn’t into the comics it was a crazy twist for me. After last night’s intense episode I’ve been trying to think why Prometheus/ Chase makes such a good villain and it’s because of how personal he is to Oliver, yes Slade was but Slade also was trying to destroy the city. Chase only wants to destroy Oliver and he’s the first villain who doesn’t actually want to kill him, he just wants to break him and this episode showed how truly desperate and near-broken Oliver is, this was all tremendous acting by both Stephen Amell and Josh Segarra.
The episode started with a very Batman Begins like (Surprise surprise) scene, Oliver’s going after Talia (which he probably should have done months ago) in order to learn who Prometheus is, and it turns out Talia is pretty angry over Oliver’s killing of her father, so she tells Oliver who Prometheus is and tells Oliver that she’s allowing Chase to do what he’s doing because Oliver deserves this. The scenes in this episode that show Oliver and Adrian trying to act calm and friendly in public are some of the best scenes I think I’ve ever seen this show put out, especially the hospital scene with Adrian telling Oliver that he’s going to get Susan killed just like he has to almost everyone else in his life, and this is one of those rare moments where Oliver looks truly scared, broken and out of options and we see Oliver at his absolute angriest and worst when he starts smashing up the Arrow Cave (Quiver?).
Oliver’s attempt to save Susan from Adrian takes him to dark places, he gets Diggle to kidnap Chase’s wife in order to use her as leverage over him and obviously that doesn’t end well, this is another reason why in my opinion Adrian is on par with Slade at the moment, he killed his own wife even though he loves her so that she cannot be used as leverage over him, he’s willing to sacrifice people he loves for his hate for Oliver and that’s something that I don’t think any of the other villains had.
There was another revelation in this episode as well as it was revealed that Adrian Chase is an alias and that his real name is Simon Morrison which puts back on the table the theory that (POSSIBLE SPOILER) the real Adrian Chase is Vigilante. The end of this episode had a really well done fight in which Oliver and Adrian got toe to toe and it’s shown that they’re just as good as each other, neither of them were winning the fight before Talia got involved and Oliver is willing to die to take down Chase which just adds to how much Chase is messing with Ollie’s head.
Felicity had her Helix plot this episode and while obviously it wasn’t near as exciting as the Prometheus plot it was still enjoyable and she was able to help Team Arrow with her new found resources. And while the flashbacks were kind of just more shoot outs between Kovar’s Bratva and Anatoly/ Ollie, there was a really nice fight scene towards the end that had The Hood sliding across a hockey field while shooting arrows.
The end of this episode has Oliver in one of the toughest spots he’s ever been put in and it looks like he’s going to be torturing Oliver and trying to break him, the tables have truly turned on the Green Arrow and I’m so excited and scared to see what happens in the final 7 episodes.
10/10 Arrow was amazing this week.
