Astros promote top offensive prospect
The Houston Astros are calling up their top outfield prospect Derek Fisher for tonight’s game against the Rangers–first reported by KHOU 11 News in Houston. GM Jeff Luhnow has stated recently that Fisher is ready for a promotion, “To me, Derek Fisher is ready.”
Fisher, 23, was ranked in the Top 100 prospects in America to start the season (83rd on MLB.com) and moved up that list (72nd) after crushing Triple-A pitching. He slashed .335/.401/.608 with 16 home runs, 19 doubles and 13 stolen bases with the Fresno Grizzlies.
The Astros needed an extra position player with Josh Reddick hitting the 7-day concussion DL and Nori Aoki not giving the offense much of a boost.
One thing that is not known is how long will Fisher be up for? If he hits like he did in the minors could that make Aoki expendable? The Astros still have Jake Marisnick and Marwin Gonzalez who can play OF opposite George Springer and the previously mentioned Reddick.
More details will emerge, but during a time when the Astros are getting demolished with injuries it’s good to see they have a plethora of options in their farm system.
