‘Atlanta’ FX Review: “Money Bag Shawty”
Last week on Atlanta FX, Zazie Beetz made her return as Van in season two’s third episode, “Money Bag Shawty”. I love that this show makes me laugh in the first five minutes of every episode. The opening video of a mom (Blair Busbee) ranting about the lyrics to Paper Boi’s song is so real and that’s what makes Atlanta so good. The writers take pop culture and current trends and weave them into the story seamlessly.
The sequence with Al and Darius visiting Clark County in the studio was so awkward that I was stuck in that place where I felt uncomfortable but I couldn’t stop laughing because it was so silly. How many times can a computer software crash? Poor dude!
Anybody else sometimes have a hard time getting through awkward moments in movies and tv shows? I’ve paused things mid-scene before because of that.
I’m happy to see Van again. Zazie and Donald play off of each other well and create good chemistry between Van and Earn. On another note, it sucks to see that even when Earn does get money, he can’t even spend it the way he wants because of discrimination both from people of color and white establishments.
But I need Earn to stop trying to spend all his money the moment he gets it. Someone encourage him to open a savings account! A strip club definitely isn’t the place for a guy who doesn’t even have his own place to stay or a steady job.
Michael Vick’s cameo at the end of the episode was hilarious. I love the way the show has these random cameos. I couldn’t help but laugh at the way they did the freeze frame and then jumped to Earn and Van in the limo. I actually believed for a second that Earn could beat Michael Vick in a race.
Review of last week’s episode of Atlanta FX
The Atlanta FX writers do a great job of creating a unique pacing and style for the comedy. The show is funny but not in the same way other comedy series are. There’s a groundedness to the characters and what happens to them that sets a tone for the series that is one of a kind. I also love how every episode Earn gets some words of wisdom in the midst of whatever is going on. This week’s take: you can’t dress like your broke and expect people to treat you special.
I’m giving the episode a 9/10.
Atlanta FX airs Thursdays at 10 PM on FX
