Austin Peay vs Troy Preview and Prediction
Austin Peay vs Troy Preview
A matchup that has sparked a small rivalry will renew for the fourth time since 2014 as Austin Peay (2-4) heads on the road to start a month-long road trip against the Troy Trojans (3-3).
Austin Peay has had the Trojans number, winning all four previous meetings. In the last matchup, the Governors slipped past the Trojans, 75-73 in Clarksville, Tenn. on Dec. 19, 2017. Then-senior Wesley Person scored a game-high 28 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and two rebounds. Then-freshman Javan Johnson added 12 points off the bench with four boards, two assists, a block and a steal.
SCOUTING THE GOVERNORS
Austin Peay suffered a tough 85-82 overtime loss to Ohio on Saturday in Ohio. In the game, the Governors saw five players eclipse double digits led by senior Chris Porter-Bunton posting 16 points with five boards, two assists and three steals. Sophomore Terry Taylor nearly posted a double-double in 13 points and eight boards. Taylor leads the team averaging a double-double with 18ppg, third-highest in the Ohio Valley Conference, and 11rpg, highest in conference.
Terry Taylor and Jarrett Givens both earned All-Tournament honors for the island portion of the Jersey Mike’s Jamaica Classic. Taylor averaged 19.0 points and 13.5 rebounds on 51.6 percent shooting in MoBay, while Givens made his fi rst two starts as a Gov in Jamaica, averaging 11.5 points, 5.5 boards and a block.
SCOUTING THE TROJANS
On Thursday, the Trojans (3-3) shot a season-high 52.6 percent (30-of-57) en route to a 77-58 victory over North Alabama. Senior Jordon Varnado led the way posting his fourth 20-point game of the season in a game-high 20 points alongside six rebounds, five assists, two blocks and a steal.
Three Trojans joined Varnado in double figures with seniors BJ Miller and Alex Hicks dropping 18 and 13, respectively while sophomore Darian Adams poured in a career-high 11. Miller’s 18 marked his personal best as well as his three three-pointers made.
On the season, Varnado leads the team averaging 16.5 points per game and 9.2 rebounds per game, the second-highest in the Sun Belt Conference. Hicks adds 12.0 points per contest on 54.5 percent (30-of-55) from the field and Miller leads Troy in assists (3.0) and steals (1.2) per game.
With Wesley Person Jr. departing to Italy following graduation, Varnado has stepped into a larger role in the Trojans plans; he’s averaging 16.5 points and 9.2 rebounds and will be a good foil for Terry Taylor to measure himself against in this contest. He missed more than a month last season, including the Trojans’ contest against the Govs, with a foot injury.
LINE: -4.5 Troy
The Governors have ‘governed’ Troy since 2014, winning every contest between the two schools. Tonight, will tell a different story as Troy is the more talented team, playing in the comforts of their own arena.
Troy wins outright and covers the point spread.
