Ava DuVernay’s ‘Queen Sugar’ Renewed
Rejoice, Queen Sugar fans! It was announced yesterday that the series will be back for a third season on OWN Network. The show, which is based on a book of the same title by Natalie Baszile is set in Louisiana and revolves around the Bordelon family as they inherit a farm and struggle to come together after loss. It is produced by Oprah Winfrey, director and writer Ava DuVernay (Selma, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time) and Melissa Carter.
One unique feature about the show is that most of the episodes have different directors. The all-female directorial team have captured the drama of the Bordelon family and the visuals of Louisiana amazingly and have given fans beautiful shots that vary from profile shots of the cast, emotionally impactful visuals of New Orleans and its post-Katrina struggle to the beautiful landscapes of the Bordelon farm.
Although the series was snubbed by the Emmys, Queen Sugar has seen critical success. The show’s season two premiere last month scored a series’ high in its core demographic, women aged 25-54. With its amazing storytelling and talented cast, its numbers should be no surprise. And speaking of the cast, you can catch Queen Sugar star, Kofi Siriboe alongside Jada Pinkett-Smith, Tiffany Haddish, Queen Latifah, and Regina Hall in Girls Trip which is out now in theaters.
