Batman #2 review

Spoiler Alert! Batman #2 Review

With the arrival of Gotham and Gotham Girl on the scene they’re trying to help save the city. They do so by stopping Solomon Grundy, but Batman comes to save the day because a homeless person almost gets killed during the process. Gotham admits that he makes mistakes and wants Batman to teach them to do better. Bruce only does so because he realizes they’ll be threats that he can’t solve himself.

Perhaps this is a good choice for Bruce because he’s too focused on being Batman to do anything else. He’s even missing his own charity event that he’s hosting and can’t even stay for long because he has an emergency to deal with.

No major clues are given about Gotham and Gotham Girl motives and past, they are pretty much the perfect silver age hero. Always try to help, friendly attitudes, and a little naive. I like that they do have such a ‘can do’ spirit attitude. They are almost like what Robin was to Batman, he was always the light-hearted one to balance out Batman’s pessimistic attitude, but since there isn’t a Robin with Batman these two make a great replacement with optimistic ¬†attitudes. It’s a shame that these two won’t be what they seem to be in future issues because I know they are hiding some alternate motive and secret which will undo all of their heroism. Also the ending reveals that Amanda Waller and Hugo Strange appear to be working together to “save” Gotham.

The art by David Finch kind of looked off in the first three pages, but it picks up right after and remains consistent, showing how a Batman story should look.

Tom King continues to show why he’s worthy to be writing Batman because of the polar opposites that Batman and the Gothams are makes for an engaging read.
