Best and Worst Case Scenarios for the Red Wings in Free Agency
Free agency is fast approaching the NHL with many players looking for new homes and some wanting to return to the same team. The Detroit Red Wings are looking to be big spenders after trading away Pavel Datysuk’s contract during the NHL Draft, giving them $18 million in cap space. There is a list of players Detroit is aiming for in free agency, but there are only three people on it as of right now. Steven Stamkos, Frans Nielsen and Milan Lucic in that order are on the list for Detroit. Now Detroit will have some kind of scenario unfold come Friday and certainly by Monday. Now we won’t know what will happen with the team until Friday but here are some best and worst case scenarios for the Red Wings.
Best Case Scenario 1 – Steven Stamkos Signs and Becomes a Wing
This is the main goal. This is why Detroit traded away Datsyuk’s contract. This is Ken Holland’s mission and after missing out on Ryan Sutter and Zach Parise a few offseasons ago, Holland doesn’t want to miss out on another huge free agent. In this scenario, Detroit offers Stamkos a seven-year deal for $10.5 million a year and Stamkos picks them over Toronto, Buffalo and others. Detroit would still have at least $7 million to play around with, but with offers getting sent to RFA’s, that money could all be gone or down to a minimum.
Best Case Scenario 2 – Detroit Has a Plan B and Executes it
Now this scenario does have Detroit missing out on the number one player on their list, but Holland is smart enough to have a backup plan. The list that is supposedly out with Nielsen and Lucic behind Stamkos is a good sign. Detroit misses out on their gold player, but still end up getting someone who can contribute and that is a good player. Kyle Okposo is someone Detroit is targeting as well so Detroit signing him as a backup plan works as well. Matt Martin is another player that could end up with a winged wheel. Detroit needs to prepare for this as Stamkos not signing is possible, and assuming he is coming with no backup plan is dangerous for this team who barely made it in the playoffs last year.
Worst Case Scenario 1 – Detroit Can’t Sign Steven Stamkos
The Toronto Maple Leafs and Buffalo Sabers are the biggest threats to Detroit signing Stamkos. Toronto will have money and they are his home country, so they could be the biggest frontrunners for Stamkos. Along with having Toronto being a home team, they are also rumored to be ready to offer Stamkos a $3.5 million a year marketing contract, and that wouldn’t affect the cap space for Toronto and they would control the ads Stamkos would appear in, so extra cash could lure him in. Buffalo will have a good amount of money to spend and they need a big player to match with Jack Eichel and possibly bring Buffalo back up.
Worst Case Scenario 2 – Detroit Doesn’t Have a Plan B and is a Big Loser in Free Agency
With that news about Stamkos and the chances of him not landing in Detroit are possible, Detroit needs to have a backup plan. The list featured above does have Nielsen and Lucic, but rumors are circulating that Lucic and the Oilers have already agreed to a deal, but they can’t sign it until July 1. So if those rumors are true, there goes one player Detroit has targeted. Nielsen is going to be asking for at least $6 million a year and while he is a good player, Detroit may see that as a too high of price and pass on him. They tried to target defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk in a trade, but the Blues wanted Dylan Larkin in return and Detroit rejected that trade (shocker right?). They were interested in Alexander Radulov, but his asking price was too high and he signed a deal to stay in the KHL. Detroit needs to try and find someone to come to Detroit, because if they don’t they will end up with a lot of cash and no new players coming into the 2016-2017 season.https://www.myfantasysportstalk.com/best-and-worst-case-scenarios-for-the-red-wings-in-free-agency/https://i2.wp.com/www.myfantasysportstalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stamkos.jpg?fit=1024%2C627&ssl=1https://i2.wp.com/www.myfantasysportstalk.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/stamkos.jpg?resize=150%2C150&ssl=1HockeyNHLRecent Posts#Steven Stamkos,Detroit Red Wings,NHL,NHL Free Agency,Red Wings, scenarioFree agency is fast approaching the NHL with many players looking for new homes and some wanting to return to the same team.
