Betrayals in WWE are expected, and usually the WWE universe can pinpoint them before they happen. With the recent backstabbing by Kevin Owens on his former best friend Chris Jericho, it got the mind’s of our SmackTalk team thinking about some of the betrayals in the past. Danny and I (Matt) decided to put a list together of some of our favorite betrayals.

This list will be in no particular order, we’re just hoping to bring back some memories to the WWE Universe in case they had forgotten about some of these! Let’s get this started!

Stone Cold betrays WWE

Let’s begin by taking us back to 2001. Shane McMahon purchased WCW to the surprise of his father, and Stephanie McMahon purchased ECW. This was a curveball that the WWE universe appreciated, but when WCW & ECW joined forces and created The Alliance, the universe revolted. Fans of course jumped on board with their home show and backed WWE. With a leader like Stone Cold Steve Austin, how can anyone bet against the house? However, at the pay-per-view Invasion, the Texas Rattlesnake hit Kurt Angle with his patented Stone Cold Stunner, allowing Booker T to pick up the victory. With Stone Cold duping the ENTIRE universe most of us fans, myself included, thought WWE would fall without a leader like Stone Cold. We now know to never bet against Mr. McMahon, but for a brief moment we ALL believed Stone Cold would take The Alliance to the promised land.

Triple H betrays DX

D-Generation X is one of the, if not the, most popular factions in WWE’s history. It began with Shawn Michaels, Triple H, and Chyna and then evolved after HBK’s first retirement into a DX led by Triple H involving Chyna, X-Pac, and the New Age Outlaws. While Triple H helped build DX, he also helped in its demise. Fast forward to 1999, where the Corporation was already in full swing in running WWF. It started when Chyna abandoned Triple H in January to join the Corporation. Nevertheless, at Wrestlemania 15, she surprisingly helped Triple H in his match against Kane and seemingly reunited with DX. But it didn’t last long. Later in the night, in a match between Shane McMahon (Corporation) against X-Pac (DX), Triple H and Chyna came to the ring and shockingly turned on X-Pac and caused him to lose the match. Triple H had betrayed the faction he had helped build to greatness and joined the Corporation.

Triple H betrays Shawn Michaels

Triple H has hit our list yet again. This time it was his betrayal of his long time best friend, Shawn Michaels. In 2002, it seemed like the original DX would be reforming again. But to the surprise of the WWE universe, Triple H pedigreed Shawn Michaels and began one of the best feuds to date. The feud had many memorable moments, which began with an “unsanctioned” street fight at Summerslam that year. Shawn Michaels would even win the World Heavyweight Championship from Triple H in the very first Elimination Chamber match. His title reign was short-lived, as Triple H regained the title a month later at Armageddon in a Three Stages of Hell match. Triple H and Shawn Michaels are actually friends, and it showed with this feud. The chemistry between the two was always there, and it proved to be one of the best feuds I’ve been able to witness.

Not all betrayals end friendships for good. The duo of Triple H and Shawn Michaels proves this. After beating the absolute hell out of each other beginning in 2002, the two would eventually join forces once again and reform D-Generation X in 2006. Crazy how things change so quickly!

I know we’ve missed many memorable betrayals, such as Evolution turning on Randy Orton, or Seth Rollins’ infamous betrayal of the Shield, but we’d like to hear from the WWE universe.
