Betting on the NFL in the UK—The Facts
Just as there has been an upsurge in interest in Britain in American football, there has been an upsurge in interest in betting on the NFL in the UK. We Brits are a nation of gamblers, and placing a wager on the result of a gridiron match up (as long as it is done responsibly) can add a little excitement to proceedings. The question is, how is it done?
All the leading online sports books (think Ladbrokes, Coral and William Hill for example) have excellent coverage of the NFL, and allow you to place bets on NFL games. All you need to do is open an account with them and deposit some of your cash (remember, never gamble with money that you can’t afford to lose). You’ll find that most sports books will give you a little welcome bonus once you sign up, such as a free bet. If you want to find out what NFL betting is all about, then you can use your free bet so you don’t have to risk any of your own cash. Don’t get too excited though – if your free bet is a winning one, you’ll only receive back any winnings, not the free bet stake itself.
Most sports books will allow you to place a punt on an NFL fixture in the traditional UK way, in that each team in a game will be given odds on them winning. You can choose traditional odds (such as 5/2) or the increasingly popular decimal odds (such as 3.50). To convert from traditional
to decimal odds, just convert the ‘fractional’ odds into a decimal and add one. To work how much you’ll get back from a bet using decimal odds, just multiple your stake by the number (so a £10 stake at 3.50 would get you back £35).
In the US they do things differently when it comes to wagering, as you might expect. Instead of having odds, teams are given an artificial handicap or boost in order to level the playing field a little. Say the New England Patriots were playing the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots are favorites,
so they are given a ‘handicap’ of -3.5, while the Dolphins are given +3.5. This means that if you bet on the Patriots to win, they would have to win by at least four points in order for your bet to be successful. A score of 21-19 would not be enough, as when the artificial handicap is applied, the result becomes 17.5-19 to the Dolphins.
With NFL betting you can also bet on other aspects of the game, such as the winning margin, the first player to score a touchdown, the total points scored during the encounter and even the number of field goals that will be successful. If you’re hot on your NFL knowledge, then there
really is the chance for you to make a few quid by betting on the NFL in the UK. Just remember to be sensible when it comes to any form of wagering.
