Bills free agency targets
It’s no secret that the Buffalo Bills had some holes to fill following their 2014 campaign which saw them finish at 9-7 in the AFC East. It’s also obvious that Rex Ryan is not going to stand pat and settle for the Patriots winning year in and year out. The Bills have already had a huge impact on the market this offseason, as well as the AFC East, with the trades that they’ve tentatively made for Lesean McCoy and Matt Cassel.
On top of that, they have restructured the contract of McCoy (5 years for $40 million) and signed their biggest free agent in defensive end Jerry Hughes. Let me remind you that the new season has yet to start (begins March 10 at 3pm EST), and the moves made are a nice proactive change of pace for the Bills.
That brings us to the free agency period, starting tomorrow afternoon, and there are some great free agents that are available on the market this year.
The Bills just shipped off their young stud linebacker, Kiko Alonso, to the Philadelphia Eagles in the McCoy trade, and what better way to fill that hole than with Lance Briggs. Yes, Briggs was injured last season and has missed 15 games the last two seasons, but all that did was drop his worth slightly. Briggs can bring the pain, and would fit into Ryan’s defensive plans very well.
*Mike Iupati–Offensive Guard
The Bills had one of, if not, the worst offensive lines in the NFL last season, and Iupati would be a great addition to bolster the o-line. Buffalo has already added Richie Incognito, and Iupati would be a solid piece upfront for the Bills to go along with Incognito.
It appears that the Patriots are doing all they can to keep “Revis Island,” but with Rex Ryan being in Buffalo, the Bills might have a chance to swoop in and sign him. If the Bills were able to sign Revis, that would give them a dynamic duo in Revis and Stephon Gilmore. Would that mean that we would have to start referring to them as Batman and Robin?
Charles Clay–Tight End
Sure, there are two stud tight ends in Julius Thomas (Denver) and Jordan Cameron (Cleveland) available, but I like Clay a lot more. He can fly down the field and offers a very physical presence when blocking for the run game. Plus, I think that he is the cheapest option of the three (even with the transition tag), and hasn’t had any significant injuries so far. Thomas is injury prone and likely headed to the Jaguars, and Cameron is coming off of a season of concussions. If Clay does land in Buffalo, they might have their own two-headed monster in Clay and TE Scott Chandler.
The Bills are letting Da’Norris Searcy test free agency this offseason, and that seems like bad news for the Bills. It would mark the second straight offseason that they might lose a stud safety, but the amount of decent safeties that are available in free agency makes it a little easier to breathe. Rahim Moore would be a great addition, as he brings a physical presence and some great speed at safety. Safety is the second most important area of focus for the Bills in free agency this season, behind the offensive line.
While these are only a few players that might be donning a Bills jersey in 2015, some of them might provide a challenge if the Bills get into a bidding war with other teams for their services.
But, who wouldn’t want a chance to make Tom Brady and the New England Patriots look human following their crazy Super Bowl victory? I bet every name on this list would relish that opportunity.
*REVISION: Shortly after posting this article, Mike Iupati signed a deal with the Arizona Cardinals (Article Wrecker!) So, here is another lineman that would be a good fit.
Bryan Bulaga–Offensive Right Tackle
There is talk that Bulaga is on the Bills radar, and he would be able to bolster this line just as much as Iupati would have. Yes, Iupati was a guard and Bulaga is a right tackle, but the Bills have several offensive linemen that can play multiple positions for them. At this point, it’s all about signing the best o-line player and worry about the rest later.
