The Boston Celtics had four picks coming into the night and, by the end of it, had drafted four players headlined by Terry Rozier. Rozier, the 16th pick in the draft, was a bit of a reach given his pre-draft projection. The pick is even more puzzling considering the Celtics already have a young point guard, Marcus Smart, and sixth man Isaiah Thomas, on the roster. Rozier is known as a great defender which will fit in with Smart’s strengths as a player, but drafting a point guard in the first round two years in a row still seems odd.

The Celtics’ second first round pick, R.J. Hunter, made a lot more sense given how poor the Celtics shot from beyond the arc last season. Although Hunter’s numbers regressed last season, he still is a capable shooter that will fit in Boston. With their first pick in the second round the Celtics selected LSU power forward Jordan Micky. Micky was a double-double player for the Tigers last season. He also has a knack for blocking shots, which is one area the Celtics desperately needed to address. With their fourth and final pick in the 2015 NBA draft, the Celtics selected Marcus Thornton. Thornton, another point guard, will be trying to gain a roster spot in, what should be, a very interesting guard competition for the Celtics.

Overall, the Celtics’ draft was very underwhelming. The team reached for Rozier, who plays a position that the team did not need to address. Also, the team was involved in trade talks to move up to the ninth pick, but could not complete a deal with the Hornets. The guard position is one that will need to work itself out as time goes on. There is little chance that the team keeps all of the guards on the roster which would point to a trade being a definite possibility. In all, I give the Celtics a C- for their draft as we wait to see what the roster looks like come October.
