Broncos Select: Shane Ray in 1st Round
For the fifth consecutive year the Broncos opted for a defensive player in the first round of the draft. With so many weapons on the offensive side, Peyton Manning coming back for at least another year, this seems like a great move. Shane Ray is a defensive end that racked up an incredible number of sacks last year in college. Denver traded up from the 28th overall selection, switching spots with Detroit at number 23 overall in exchange for their own first, fourth and fifth round picks.
Shane Ray is a beast of a man at 6’3” and 245lbs., a physical specimen to behold. Last season he tallied 14.5 sacks, and displayed just what he’s capable of. Ray has a great combination and both speed and upper body power. Teamed up with DeMarcus Ware and Von Miller, the Broncos now have one of the elite pass rushing defenses of the league. Ray will be able to rotate in and out of the action, along with some of the team’s other defensive lineman, keeping each player rested and ready to go. This should allow Denver’s defensive squad to stay fresh throughout the game, enabling the defense to keep constant pressure on the other team’s quarterback.
A great new defensive end is just what the doctor ordered for Denver. They now possess yet another great weapon with which to disrupt opposing team’s offenses. This is an immense asset given the other elite quarterbacks they have to face during the course of a season. On their quest to get back to the Super Bowl the Broncos have to dissuade Tom Brady and Andrew Luck somehow from the throwing the ball. Whatever they can do to take a little less of the load off Peyton Manning is a move in the right direction.
