The 7-0 Broncos make a splash in trading for 2-time Pro Bowler TE Vernon Davis to bolster an offense that has struggled up until week 7 against the Packers where Peyton Manning threw for 340 yards. The offense is ranked 13th in points(24), 17th in yards (350.7), 14th in passing yards (255) and 25th in rushing yards (95.7).

In the offseason the Broncos let their star TE Julius Thomas walk where he signed a five-year $46 million contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars. In 2013, Thomas caught 65 passes for 788 yards, and caught 12 TDs passes in 14 games for the Broncos. In 2014, Thomas caught 43 passes for 489 yards, and a team high 12 TD passes in 13 games. Manning has missed Thomas significantly, as Owen Daniels has struggled to fill his shoes as he’s caught 17 passes for 129 yards, with 2 TDs across 7 games. Including putting up a goose egg against the Oakland Raiders whose surrendered the fifth-most yards and seventh-most receptions to tight ends and the most TD (6).

Vernon Davis has put up slightly better numbers than Daniels, catching 18 passes for 194 yards through 6 games for the struggling 49ers. With a better QB behind center with Manning. I expect the veteran Davis to catch up quickly to the Broncos offense and give Manning a better TE red zone weapon for the offense. General manager and executive vice president of the Denver Broncos John Elway said of the Vernon Davis acquisition “a valuable addition to our team with his [Davis] experience and leadership.” Indeed he will be for the 7-0 Broncos who look to improve and stay undefeated against the 3-4 Colts.
