Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin becoming a dual-sport athlete
Buffalo Bills WR Marquise Goodwin is considered one of the fastest and most athletic football players in the game today. Before he was selected in the third round of the 2013 NFL Draft by the Bills, Goodwin was an Olympic hopeful in the long jump, completing a jump with a distance of 8.33 meters at the 2012 U.S Olympic Trials. That same jump would have brought home a Gold medal in the past Summer Olympics.
With his history in the sport, Goodwin was granted a waiver that will allow him to compete in this weekend’s U.S. Track & Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Should Goodwin jump well and place in the top three he would automatically qualify for the World Championships held August 22nd-30th in Beijing, China. This is in the thick of Training Camp for the Bills and would create quite a conflict.
With the Bills having a young talented core of wide receiver’s on the roster, Goodwin will need a solid Training Camp to earn playing time this season. Currently, the Bills have Sammy Watkins, Robert Woods and Percy Harvin ahead of Goodwin on the depth chart and with 18 total catches in his two-year career, Goodwin will have decisions to make about his career should he qualify for the World Championships. Do the Bills allow Goodwin to represent the U.S.A in the games? Or do they put an ultimatum, forcing him to choose between track and football?
We will find out this weekend if this will be a possible scenario this summer, but I know I will be rooting Goodwin to succeed.
