byron nelson scouting report
(USA TODAY Sports)

Strengths:

  • Football IQ
  • Instincts
  • Productive-7 interceptions and 20 pass breakups in just 87 career targets
  • Made plays on 31 percent of his targeted throws over two years
  • Ball skills
  • Willing in run support
  • Very competitive nature
  • Instant plant and drive

Weaknesses:

  • Size
  • Only 20 games played
  • Quicker than fast with questionable long speed
  • Average recovery burst when beaten from press

Analysis: Byron Murphy is a ball-hawk who has posted elite numbers in very limited games played. His long speed is below average and will panic and start grabbing when he ends up in an unexpected trail position–but his game will translate to the NFL. He is very willing in run support and can take over a locker room with his leadership qualities. He may be a little undersized, but that should not prevent him from going in Round 1.

Size: 5’11 190lbs

Draft Rank: No.3 CB

NFL Comparison: Steven Nelson

Draft Projection: Round 1
