Can the New York Knicks keep the peace?
The New York Knicks’ season is in full swing. However, there is an issue the fanbase and Knicks star forward Carmelo Anthony should address. Rookie Kristaps Porzingis deserves an apology.
Phil Jackson had Knicks fans and basketball analysts scratching their heads when he selected the 7′ 3” Latvian forward 4th overall. Anthony even questioned the Zen Master personally, complaining there wasn’t enough for the team to reach the postseason. Porzingis is averaging 11.4 points 8.4 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks. But what catches the crowd’s attention is Porzingis’ intensity and put-back dunk displays. On the road against Toronto Raptors, Porzingis jumped nearly the entire opposing team and even some Knicks bystanders to throw down a monster dunk. See the video below.
Porzingis is under Anthony’s mentorship. During that time the Knicks hope Porzingis becomes the next great NBA big man. He looks like the real deal and he can become better if this is what he’s capable of so far. The New York Knicks can reach the playoffs and claim success if they maintain the Anthony and Porzingis relationship. This Batman and Robin partnership carries potential for failure, just like the comic book duo’s eventual break up. Robin left Batman to pursue his own career, ironically in New York City. He felt he wasn’t given the full respect he deserved from his mentor, considering himself Batman’s equal, not his sidekick. He decided to reinvent himself as Nightwing and ended up becoming as great if not better than Batman. Furthermore, when Batman went missing he took on the mantle of the Caped Crusader. Just across the Brooklyn Bridge lies the Barclays Center and the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks would hate if Porzingis, even Anthony for that matter, left for Brooklyn for a new start and possibly greater success than the other to where the Nets became the team of New York City.
With Anthony and Porzingis taking on the Batman and Robin role respectively, Anthony can teach Porzingis how to adapt to New York life, both on and off the court. As Anthony is also a superstar on the court he’s just as much a star off of it. He’s been in television, movies, magazines, countless interviews, and has his own shoe line in the Jordan brand. His wife, LaLa Anthony, is a big entertainer in Hollywood. Anthony is the Bruce Wayne of his industry in combining sports and fame into one career. Head Coach Derek Fisher can get Porzingis’ body basketball ready as the forward does need to add a little more weight to be able tussle with the seasoned big men of the NBA such as DeAndre Jordan and DeMarcus Cousins. But when it comes to the fame of being a Knick, they can’t teach him that. Anthony will instill his knowledge upon Porzingis, and the rookie is sure to take notes as his career goes along.
However, if Porzingis becomes just as big as Anthony, if not bigger, what does that mean for the team? Can they keep this duo together under one spotlight, or will one see no use of the other as a partner? Anthony is waning in his superstar career while Porzingis is attempting to soar off to great heights. If Porzingis becomes the superstar the Knicks front office and fan base hope he’ll be, it’ll be No. 6 who runs the show. Is that going to sit well with Anthony or will he fight back? Anthony has the goods to be the face of any franchise but so does Porzingis. His rookie season has gained fame with Hall of Famer Magic Johnson tweeting Porzingis was the steal of the draft. Don’t think Porzingis doesn’t remember the headline only a week later that Anthony approached the Knicks and Phil Jackson on their draft choice and opening season roster as many fans and critics expected the Knicks to go for big name free agents, all of whom chose to remain at their locations or move to new pastures.
If the New York Knicks have a stud in Kristaps Porzingis, then what they also have is a valuable trade piece that any championship team, or perhaps any team for that matter are willing to trade players and draft picks to get a shot at the NBA championship. Furthermore, as Phil Jackson is also eyeing the silverware to return to the Knicks trophy case, this trade hopes to benefit New York with new players that can make this roster one more feared when playoff time comes around.
The only question is whether the Knicks will make the move or let their prayers of a strong partnership between Batman and Robin continue with the risk of an unhappy ending, and even a few pink slips at the doors of Head Coach and General Manager.
