Canisius loses tight contest against Cleveland State
The Cleveland State Vikings came away victorious against the Canisius Golden Griffins Tuesday night in a tight battle. Cleveland State won 67-64 in the Bluegrass Showcase, a game in which neither side held a lead bigger than eight points.
Rob Edwards had three 3-pointers combining for a total of 17 points and Bobby Word’s tip-in with 18 seconds left helped Cleveland State earn their first victory on the season. They took the lead for good at 56-53 on Kasheem Thomas’ 3-pointer with 10:05 to play but the Vikings led by no more than four points the rest of the way.
Jermaine Crumpton made a 3 with 1:48 left that pulled Canisius (0-2) to 65-64. The Golden Griffins attempted only two more shots – Phil Valenti’s missed 3-point attempt with 51 seconds and Kassius Robertson’s missed 3 in the final seconds.
Canisius had the largest lead of the game at 39-31 on Robertson’s 3-pointer to start the second half. Crumpton led the Griffins with 21 points. Robertson added 13 and Valenti scored 10.
It’s hard to win a game when you are -6 on boards. Cleveland State ended with a 35-29 advantage on the glass. The Vikings had 15 offensive rebounds in the victory, with eight of those coming in the game’s second half.
Canisius continues their road trip to start the season on Friday, Nov. 18 when the team travels to play at Duquesne for another Bluegrass Showcase game. Tip-off in Pittsburgh is set for 7 p.m.
Cleveland State travels to Tennessee to take on UT Martin on Friday Nov. 18 at 8 p.m.
