Canisius vs Texas State Preview
Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase
Canisius (1-3) vs. Texas State (2-2)
Canisius will continue its four-game road swing Friday night when the Golden Griffins play Texas State in a neutral site game as part of the Men Against Breast Cancer Showcase in Stockton, Calif. The Golden Griffins are 1-3 on the season after losing to Tennessee State Nov. 21. The Griffs will be playing their first games in the state of California since Dec. 22-23, 1989. Canisius is playing Texas State for the first time in program history. The Bobcats are 2-2 on the season after defeating Arkansas Pine Bluff 71-54 Wednesday night in Stockton, Calif.
The Griffs are coming off of a 60-52 loss at the hands of Tennessee State. Those 52 points scored were the lowest under second-year head coach Reggie Witherspoon. Sophomore Isaiah Reese, the MAAC’s reigning Player of the Week, scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the loss to Tennessee State. He starts Friday’s game as the only player in the MAAC to rank in the top-10 in scoring, rebounding and assists per game average. Sophomore Malik Johnson had a team-high six assists in the loss Nov. 21 at Tennessee State. Johnson ranks third in the MAAC with 5.5 assists per game this season, and he’s been good for five-or more assists 20 times in his first 38 career games as a Griff.
Texas State is led offensively by sophomore Nijal Pearson, who is good for 14 points per game. Pearson, who was a Sun Belt All-Tournament Team
honoree last season, also leads the team with his 7.5 rebounds per contest this year. Texas State junior guard Isaiah Gurley is in his first year with the Bobcats. The Brooklyn, N.Y., native started his career at Canisius, where he played 30 games and averaged 2.8 points per game for the Griffs in 2015-16.
Canisius is 3-2 all-time against current members of the Sun Belt Conference. The Griffs’ last game against a Sun Belt team came in 2015-16, when
the Blue and Gold defeated ULM 108-96 in three overtimes in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic.
The Griffs went cold from the field in the second half of their loss to Tennessee State–a game they led much of the first half. I do not expect to see the same poor shooting results in this contest–the Griffs are too talented stroking the basketball to throw up another dud.
