In one word, the 30th pick by the Carolina Panthers was… interesting. Vernon Butler out of Louisiana Tech was a very productive interior defensive lineman in college.  He is a big body with a great motor.  He can disrupt the run and was a decent pass rusher from his DT spot.  The interesting part is, the Panthers appeared set on the interior of the line with Star Lotulelei and Kawaan Short.  This move could be forward thinking in case the Panthers aren’t able to retain one of the two stud DT’s next offseason, and the best strategy is to make sure a strength of your team does not become a weakness next year.

That being said, there is a glaring hole in the Panthers secondary with the departure of Josh Norman.  All of the guessing games about who is to blame aside, a tremendous amount of talent left a large void in the defensive backfield.  There was a run on DB’s earlier in the round (with what I thought was a large reach by the Giants to take Eli Apple out of Ohio State), so it’s possible there were no players left that the Panthers felt were a better value than Butler.  If I were in David Gettleman’s seat, I would have taken a LONG look at Vonn Bell from Ohio State to shore up one of the safety spots in the secondary.

This takes nothing away from Butler, he has the potential to be a tremendous piece on the interior of the Panthers line.  At the very worst, the Panthers now have a three-headed monster at DT that will keep fresh legs in the game.  If those fresh legs can pounce on the opponents run game and disrupt the QB’s throwing motion, then the secondary might not look like such a liability.

Gettleman has five picks remaining, let’s see what he does next.
