The Good Doctor

We’re still catching on all of the tear-inducing and heartwarming episodes of The Good Doctor. Here’s a quick recap and the MFST take on season two, episode fifteen, “Risk and Reward”.

Recap

In this episode, Daniel Kim joined The Good Doctor as their new chief of surgery, Dr. Jackson Han. It was a rocky start. Instead of attending his welcome brunch with Andrews and St. Bonaventure board members, he scrubbed in on a surgery. His style didn’t vibe with Shaun’s OR preferences. His supposed ego also caused some tension with other doctors too.

On Dr. Han’s orders, Melendez, Park, and Reznick ran tests on Minesh Goyal, a wealthy CEO.  Elsewhere, Shaun honestly answered a mother’s question about whether or not her anti-depression medicine could have caused her newborn’s birth defects, which didn’t sit well with Han. When Lim and Browne tried to defend him, Han wasn’t having it and told Claire to focus on her own shortcomings. He also told Shaun not to speak with the parents again. With Shaun’s solution for the heart, but not one for little Percy’s bowels, Han made the decision to move forward with surgery when the parents can’t agree.

The Good DoctorIt was almost a loss until Shaun had another suggestion that saved Percy’s life. In another OR, Melendez and co. successfully removed Goyal’s tumor with a risky surgery. Goyal didn’t care if it was malignant or not, so Melendez threw the results away. Before Shaun went home, Han came outside and told him that he was being moved to the pathology department. Shaun was visually upset and continued to declare he was a surgical resident.

On the other side of “Risk and Reward”, Dr. Glassman encountered a young man during his chemotherapy treatments. The man, Larry, encouraged him to join a support group and find a community. Glassman wasn’t into the idea until a discussion with Shaun about his autism being a part of who he is changed his mind.

Final take on The Good Doctor, “Risk and Reward”

From this first meeting, I’m not a fan of Han. I can already see that he’s going to give Shaun a hard time. After setting up Lim and Melendez as a couple, they didn’t have any scenes together. I would have loved to see them react to Han together. I’m looking forward to seeing how Reznick handles Han’s cold shoulder. I’m not looking forward to watching Shaun struggle. As usual, this episode had a lot of emotional tension.

I’m giving “Risk and Reward” an 8 out of 10.
