College basketball season is here–and as we have done for the last few years, MFST will be previewing and predicting the winners of all of the games each day. We pride ourselves on our love for the mid-majors, so you can count on us for all of your game previews and analysis. This year, we will be keeping track on our picks against the spread–the last two years we have had better than a 50% pick-rate ATS. Let’s make the 2019-20 season the most profitable yet…

Get to know Ohio

Jeff Boals takes over an Ohio program that was supposed to be a solid team in the MAC this season–that’s because when Boals got the job, he had two solid anchors on which to build in Jason Carter and Teyvion Kirk. Both players entered the transfer portal a short time later.

The Bobcats looked solid in their exhibition matchup against Capital–not like that is difficult to do, though. Leading Ohio was sophomore guard Jason Preston who scored a team-high 17 points, going 5-of-12 from the floor and 6-of-6 from the free-throw line. Preston also dished out six assists had three steals and grabbed seven rebounds. Redshirt senior guard Jordan Dartis finished with 13 points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out two assists in 13 minutes. Freshman guard Lunden McDay finished his first day as a Bobcat on the court with 12 points, two assists and three steals, while redshirt sophomore forward Ben Vander Plas added nine points and five rebounds. Freshman center Nolan Foster finished the day with a team-leading eight rebounds.

Overall, Ohio shot 41.1 percent from the floor, 23.8 percent from three-point range and 83.3 percent from the free throw line, while Capital shot 31.7 percent from the field, 20.8 percent from three-point range and 60.0 percent from the free throw line. Ohio out-rebounded the Crusaders 44-37, while forcing 19 turnovers and scoring 30 points off of them.

Get to know St. Bonaventure

The Bonnies lost a lot in the offseason, but get to know the name Osun Osunniyi.

The 6’10 sophomore was one of the best defensive players in all of college basketball last season as a freshman, averaging 2.7 blocks to go along with his 7.5 points and 7.6 boards. With three of the Bonnies’ top four scorers graduating, he is going to be asked to play a much bigger role this season.

In their final tune-up before the regular season begins, the Bonnies handled neighbor Alfred State 90-45.

Alejandro Vasquez made his Bonaventure debut by scoring a game-high 20 points on 7-of-14 shooting from the floor. Bobby Planutis (11 points), Robert Carpenter (10) and Alpha Okoli (10) all scored in double figures as well.

Despite welcoming six newcomers to the roster for the new season, the Bonnies stifled the Saxons from the outset. Alfred scored the game’s first four points, but the Bonnies broke off the next 14 while holding the Saxons off the scoreboard for over nine minutes of game action.

Head coach Mark Schmidt after the game:

There were some bad things that we did, some things we need to improve on. Everybody, especially the young guys, to get them comfortable in this environment. They get the uniform on, the lights on. There were some butterflies as you saw in the first half. As the game went along, I thought our offense got better. We shot better in the second half.

There were some good things. (Vasquez) shot the ball well when he takes good shots. There’s a lot of things that we need to work on both offensively and defensively. Hopefully the guys got comfortable. We’ll get back to work tomorrow and get ready for Ohio Tuesday.

On Vasquez: He can shoot the ball when he shoots good shots, but he’s picked up the system quicker than some other guys that we’ve had in my 13 years, but he has a lot to work on. His defense, as you saw tonight. We need two or three of the young guys to help us and hopefully he’ll be one of those guys.
