CBB: Rider vs UMass Preview and Prediction
College basketball season is here–and as we have done for the last few years, MFST will be previewing and predicting the winners of all of the games each day. We pride ourselves on our love for the mid-majors, so you can count on us for all of your game previews and analysis. This year, we will be keeping track on our picks against the spread–the last two years we have had better than a 50% pick-rate ATS. Let’s make the 2019-20 season the most profitable yet…
Rider vs UMass Preview
Rider (2-1) opened the season with consecutive wins at Coppin State and Delaware State, before falling at Arizona State. They have another difficult battle ahead of them as they head to Massachusetts to take on the undefeated UMass Minutemen (4-0).
UMass is off to their best start since the 2015-16 season. The Minutemen are one of 71 remaining unbeaten teams in the NCAA, and one of 39 with a record of 4-0 or better. So far this season, Massachusetts is averaging just 9.8 turnovers per game, tied for the 13th fewest in the NCAA, while the team’s three-point shooting is good for a tie for 29th in the country and second in the A-10 (41.3%; 38-of-92).
UMass features balanced scoring, with five players averaging in double figures, led by Sean East II at 14.3 points per game.
Rider also has a balanced attack led by an experienced group.
The Broncs return four starters. Tyrere Marshall, Frederick Scott and Dimencio Vaughn are all on pace to score their 1,000th point, and would join senior Stevie Jordan as the 38th, 39th and 40th Broncs to score 1,000 career points.
After averaging 17.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in wins at Coppin State and Delaware State, Frederick Scott was named MAAC Player of the Week on Nov. 11. Stevie Jordan scored 13 of his team-high 15 points in the second half at Arizona State. He’s now scored in double-figures in all three of Rider’s games this season.
UMass has won all nine meetings in the all-time series with Rider, most recently taking a 78-67 win on Dec. 22, 2016. Despite their hot start, I’m not a believer in UMass yet–they barely beat a sub-par Fairfield team who matches up against Rider in the MAAC. Look for Rider to play a safe, but explosive game–if they end with less turnovers, they will pull the upset.
