Best Bet

HoustonEd Oliver leads what should be a phenomenal defensive front–as long as Houston takes down all the games it’s supposed to, this could and should be the season that shows everything is on the right track under head coach Major Applewhite.

The Cougars do not have to play UCF and get to host USF at their place. The most difficult game will be the season finale at Memphis.

Value Play

Navy. Speed back Malcolm Perry is taking over the quarterback gig – for the most part – and there’s a whole lot of quickness and production waiting to roll again in the backfield. The offense will be difficult to maintain in the American Athletic, but the defense will need to step up after some key losses in order to make it back to AAC Title game.

Last year, Navy welcomed back seven of the top eight tacklers and ended up with a decent season, but not a great one. This year, the Midshipmen have to replace four of the top five and eight of the top 12 tacklers. If they can do that for 8/1 odds it’s a solid value.

Shakiest Odds

Memphis. I’ve become a Memphis fan the last few seasons–who couldn’t like a team that featured a lethal Riley Ferguson to Anthony Miller combination–but with both of those players gone, plus other key parts I was shocked to see Memphis stand at 3/1 odds.

Sure, this team has talent throughout, but the leadership alone that is missing will be difficult to replace. The Tigers are a good enough team with a good enough coaching staff to absolutely pull off another West championship and even potentially win the American Athletic, however, at 3/1 odds, it’s not worth the small prize at the end.
