After a tumultuous start to the 2015 season, Chip Kelly has officially been let go by the Philadelphia Eagles.

The team was eliminated from playoff contention on Saturday with a loss to Washington. The Eagles, who had a future full of aspirations, are now ready to cut their losses. With defeats in five of the last seven games, it became clear something wasn’t working.  The team has ranked near the bottom of the league in almost every major defensive category, including 30th in total yards allowed. Likewise, the Philadelphia offense sputtered through the entirety of the year. The previously impressive Chip Kelly offense had become more suspect than innovation.

Philadelphia had a Tough Decision to Make

Bold off-season moves, some of them highly questionable, appeared to make the team worse instead of better. Each of the past three season, the Eagles have seen a decline in play. Offense. Defense. Everything. At this point it seems the Chip Kelly experiment was more failure than success.

“I spent the last three seasons evaluating the many factors involved in our performance as a team,” team owner Jeffrey Lurie said in the letter. “As I watched this season unfold, I determined that it was time to make a change.”

Moving Forward

Early reports indicate, Chip Kelly would like to remain in the NFL, rather than moving back to college.

“We appreciate all the contributions that Chip Kelly made and wish him every success going forward,” Lurie said in a statement released by the team.
