Christian McCaffrey-RB-Stanford
Size: 6’0 201lbs

Christian McCaffrey
(USA TODAY Sports)

Strengths:

  • Agility
  • Speed
  • Vision
  • Great hands
  • Solid route-runner
  • Versatile

Analysis: After an absolutely amazing 2015 season (yes, he should have won the Heisman Trophy) McCaffrey returned (because he had to) and delivered a solid 2016 campaign. He is quick to the hole and even faster through it and into the second level, demonstrating terrific vision to set up blocks and get defenders leaning. McCaffrey is also surprisingly powerful, showing impressive leg drive and determination to twist his way through would-be tacklers. His agility is what sets him apart from most of the other backs in this class. He is hard to tackle and will break through most arm tackles and can make any defender miss in the open field. As one might expect given the fact his dad is Ed, the former Broncos WR, McCaffrey is a terrific receiver out of the backfield, naturally plucking the ball outside of his frame and securing it in one fluid motion. He is an excellent route-runner, incorporating subtle shoulder fakes and altered gaits to leave defenders guessing, creating easy separation. He can play all over the field, lining up in the backfield, the slot, even outside the hash-marks.

Weaknesses:

  • Not a “workhorse” back
  • Lacks traditional RB power
  • Willing blocker, but not a good one

Analysis: Although his college numbers don’t suggest it—many scouts are nervous about the workload McCaffrey and his body can handle. He had 437 touches over 14 games in 2015 and 304 touches in 11 games this past season. McCaffrey’s lack of ideal size for the position is most evident in his pass protection. He is a willing, cognizant blocker but simply lacks the ability to stop defenders from wrecking his QB at the next level. The team that drafts McCaffrey will have to use him in a variety of ways because he doesn’t translate to an every down back in the NFL.
