The Memphis Grizzlies went into the off-season with one ultimate goal in mind, re-sign Mike Conley. One way to accomplish that goal would be offer him more money than any one ever in the history of the NBA. That’s what they did, and the Grizzlies got their man.

The contract is reportedly for five years and $153 million.

The increased salary cap this off-season, due to a new TV deal for the NBA, is causing a free agent frenzy never seen before. The honest truth is you have mid tier players, borderline all-stars, getting paid larger contracts than most NBA Hall-of-Famers ever did.

With none of the other remaining huge free agents likely to sign long term deals, this contract could stand as the largest in NBA history until at least next off-season.

The signing of Chandler Parsons earlier Friday could have been the kiss to seal the deal. Parsons and Conley had become close friends, and Conley previously expressed that he wanted to see some moves to improve in the off-season by the Grizzlies before he made his decision. Adding Parsons definitely achieved that.

Parsons also recently stated that he trusts Grizzlies new assistant coach J.B. Bickerstaff with his life. Parsons deal is four years worth $94.8 million.

This is a record day for the Memphis Grizzlies. Not only are they handing out the richest contract in NBA history, they have had the biggest opening day of free agency in franchise history. They went into the off-season needing scoring, and an outside shooting presence, desperately. They got that in Chandler Parsons. They also needed to wrap up Conley’s return real quick. They did that.

I give the Memphis Grizzlies organization a huge thumbs up, and permission to go out and celebrate. You just spent almost $250 million dollars in less than six hours.

To all the returning Grizzlies, and newest Memphis Grizzly, Chandler Parsons, your conductor is back…
