Conor McGregor has all the makings of becoming the UFC’s version of the Rock. Both men started their respective careers in the lower rungs of the organization but when they were given an opportunity to shine, they seized the spotlight. Now, I’m not saying that McGregor will become as massive a superstar as Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson but their career paths are following a similar arc, and they both share one huge thing in common. Microphone skills.

When the Rock spoke to his millions (and millions!) of fans everyone clung onto ever word he said. His trash talk became legendary. It became an entire Thursday night wrestling show (Smackdown!). McGregor has already given his fans “Red Panty Night” when he told Lightweight champion Rafael Dos Anjos:

“I can make you rich (…) I’ll change your bum life. When you sign to fight me, it’s a celebration. You ring back home, you ring your wife – baby, we’ve done it. We’re rich, baby. Conor McGregor made us rich. Break out the red panties.”

His newest victim was Nate Diaz who he is set to fight this Saturday March 8 at UFC 196. Now in what is set to be a one sided affair, McGregor has already fired the first major shots when he called Diaz, a “little cholo gangster from the hood” and referred to him as “Nick’s little brother”, delegating him as nothing more than the sibling of his more successful brother Nick Diaz. A lot of fight fans love the Diaz brothers for their attitude and their “Trash talk” but McGregor is a true trash talker. Diaz comes off sounding like a 12 year old shouting obscenities over Call of Duty online when McGregor trashes him. Diaz sounds infantile when the best things he can muster are ” I don’t give a f*** !”, and “F*** you!” It is astounding how well McGregor can work the microphone.

“The Notorious” Conor McGregor is living up to his nickname in a way that no other competitor has.  His knockouts are highlight reel worthy. But the only thing faster than his hands, is his mouth. Love him, or hate him Conor McGregor is the trash talking king and he’s doing wonders for his brand and the sport of MMA.  If he can keep up the wins, we may be asking what McGregor is cooking.
