Cooper's Treasure

Tonight’s episode of Cooper’s Treasure opens with Darrell Miklos and his treasure hunting crew searching target area 5 on Gordon Cooper’s starchart. They only have seven days to find a valuable shipwreck. At this site they find a bronze spike. Bronze turns green from oxidation in the water. When a ship wrecks the wood splinters and leaves a debris trail. You will find spikes, anchors and grappling hooks.

Darrell admits that sometimes when he is troubled he often talks to Gordon as if he is still around. Right now he hopes Gordon is with him in spirit and helping guide him to the wreck site.

Darrell wants to check-out sites 8&9 on the starchart. The weather is bad and the water is turbulent he has already lost a day of the search. If he or Eric get hurt the operation is over. They decide to wait for a better day and instead check out the west side.

They find a cluster of targets a possible debris trail but again the weather and the coral prevents diving.
Darrell and his crew eventually do dive but Darrell misjudges the depth and dives too deep. The depth reaches past 200-feet. He doesn’t notice his limited oxygen supply.

When a diver dives that deep with very little oxygen he cannot just rapidly surface. You have to do it gradually in stages otherwise you could kill yourself. The crew loses site of Darrell and fear the worst, but after a heart stopping moment he surfaces. Winded, but fine. He admits he put his safety last becoming so focused on his target site.

Conditions become better and they search site 6 of the starchart. This is where they find a debris trail that may lead to Christopher Columbus’ shipwreck. They find barrel straps, cannon straps and grappling hooks at the site. All are dated to Columbus era.

Grappling hooks are an important find. When early ships wrecked and had valuable treasure at the first opportunity they returned to try to “fish”for the treasure. You wouldn’t find hooks unless gold, silver, jewels or pearls were aboard.

Darrell calls his father Roger with the good news, but Roger couldn’t care less and hangs up on his son.

Darrell’s spirits aren’t dampened. So he dives yet again at # 6. This time he finds the anchor.

This weeks episode is done but I’ll see you guys again next week. Cooper’s Treasure airs Tuesday’s 10 p.m. ET on the  Discovery Channel.
