‘Cooper’s Treasure’ S2 Ep 5 Recap: “Dragon’s Teeth”
This week on Cooper’s Treasure, Darrell explained to his crew Mike Perna, Eric Schmitt, and Jim Sinclair that he wanted to use a three-point plan. He decided to take a plane with Eric and scout out the ocean from above for an area Gordon Cooper called Dragon’s Teeth (D.T.). If he found anything Darrell would radio Mike to mag the area. Darrell introduced Jim to Nemo; a high tech submarine.
Darrell and Eric found two areas and nicknames the first area “Rocky Cove”. The second is named “Reef’s Edge”. Both could be the Dragon’s Teeth area Gordon refers to on the map. Mike got hits and Jim revisited the wreck they found previously. Nemo gets knocked around by the underwater currents. At 364 feet down, Jim found an anchor. It was from the Colonial period. He believed the anchor could be used as a pointer to the wreck.
At various times of diving in the designated spots, they found ballast, ballast stones, iron pins, three cannons in various sizes. Later, they found copper sheathing believed to be from an English ship. Its a 120 to 150-foot ship. The ballast lies 12 to 20 inches deep. Elsewhere, at a site on Rocky Cove Darrell found lead sheathing. Jim estimated it was from the 1500’s.
They dove again but just as they found a coral-encrusted anchor, they had to give up the search because they got surrounded by 20 to 25 sharks. Everyone regrouped on the boat and they think Dragon’s Teeth was actually 7 to 8 miles long. It would take months to search which is time they don’t have.
Cooper’s Treasure airs Thursdays on the Discovery Channel.
