The search for treasure at Bight of Acklins, Bahamas continued on this past Friday July 6th. Darrell and crew had just released the R.O.V. camera into the deep waters, when at only 303 feet deep they notice a catamaran tailing them.
The group on the catamaran pull up alongside Darrell’s boat and began quizzing them about what they are looking for. Asking about downed planes and animals. They offer to help if Darrell’s crew need anything.
After the catamaran leaves they re-submerge the R.O.V. camera. At 388 feet they find nothing. Just as they start to give up they were able to find a modern freight wreck.
The crew decides to try the shallows next. The water unfortunately is only 1.5 to 3 feet deep–with a tidal current. Darrell is warned the water will be choppy and he could get hurt or be washed away. Darrell is advised to dive straight to the bottom as soon as he enters the water–he complies and is able to bring something aboard the ship.Iron pins were found and brought aboard.
The water is so rough they must reconvene on the boat. Eric, the ship’s Captain looks at the tides and instructs that the following night’s super moon will cause the water to be as high as eight feet.
The crew typically dives using infrared lights and have been successful finding some interesting objects, but Darrell wants to use regular lighting.
Complying with Darrell, the crew lights up the ocean floor and can visibly see the wreck–it is clearly either a merchant or pirate ship. But to everyone’s dismay, it has already been salvaged.
The crew is upset that the hunt was a bust. They go back to rest. That evening while studying the maps to see if the images and placement lined up with Cooper’s maps, Darrell receives a phone call.
The individual states his friend knew Gordon Cooper and wants to talk about what he knows. Darrell agrees to meet him.
The meeting takes place in a secluded area of town with the locals celebrating.
The individual tells Darrell he knows Darrell is diving for treasure. Darrell nonchalantly informs him he’s only filming. At this point the unidentified individual pulls him aside and tells him his friend, a fisherman, knew Gordon.
He informs Darrell he is diving in the wrong area.
He then states he will tell Darrell where the treasure is if he makes him a crew member. Darrell says no!
The man goes on to ‘inform’ Darrell the whole island knows what he is up to and makes a veiled death threat to Darrell.
Darrell puts the map in a bank safe deposit box. He then calls his father, Roger Miklos. He informs Roger of his findings, his location and about the map’s whereabouts. Darrell wants his daughters to have the map if anything should happen to him. Roger wants nothing to do with it. He hangs up on Darrell.
Mike Perna, a highly experienced diver and fisherman on the crew mags out the cliffs. The bottom of the ocean is so rough and uneven he almost loses the mag. Luckily, he doesn’t and can see a scatter of debris on the water’s floor and gives the coordinates to Darrell. They dive and find a rudder apparatus off a small rescue boat from 1700’s. The smaller shipwreck indicates the big ship is close by.
Leaving us in suspense until next week….
