‘Cooper’s Treasure’ Season 2 Episode 1 Recap
After a year and two and a half months give or take, the new season of Cooper’s Treasure premiered last night at 9:00 on the Discovery Channel. The episode began with a recap of last June’s season finale. After treasure hunter Darrell Miklos traveled to the Turks and Caicos Islands, he and his crew found a ship’s anchor. It was believed to be from Christopher Columbus’ shipwreck.
Despite having proper paperwork and permission, just moments after hoisting the anchor upon Darrell’s boat, the marine police intervened. Darrell was told to photograph the anchor but it was to be returned to its resting place in the ocean. Darrell was upset and hid some of Cooper’s maps away on his boat so the authorities couldn’t seize those as well. The papers legally belonged to Miklos. He believed that someone who is holding a grudge against his father Roger Miklos was responsible.
The Turks and Caicos sites have now been closed down indefinitely. After six months of Darrell studying Gordon Cooper’s maps, he got his crew back together and heads to the Grand Bahamas where Gordon Cooper had marked on his maps. His crew consists of ship captain and recovery specialist Eric Schmitt, marine archeologist Jim Sinclair (dove onto the Titanic) and Mike Pera as the surveyor.
Darrell took the Go America research ship, The Southern Cross support boat, and The Defender ( Miklos’ own former coast guard boat), along with state of the art high tech equipment. Darrell stated he was in debt and had only eight weeks to find at least one treasure to pay back relatives, friends, and investors. Darrell had such hopes and a strong bond with his crew he even laid all of Cooper’s notes, pictures, and maps out for them to analyze. That was a highly unusual gesture from Miklos.
After discovering materials from several different shipwrecks in an area known as the holy grail of colonial shipwrecks, Darrell and his team prioritize the area around where they found a dead eye from a colonial ship and split the team into two to cover a bigger area as they search for more pieces from that particular wreck. As the episode came to an end, one team didn’t find much while Darrell and Eric find a canon.
