Sad news vampire fans! It was announced just before Comic-Con last week that season five of the CW series The Originals will be the show’s last. The show is a spin-off of the hit series The Vampire Diaries, which ended in March after eight seasons. Writer and producer Julie Plec posted the message below on Twitter and it didn’t take long for fans to react. It reads in part:

“This year, we invite you to help us say goodbye to The Originals, which begins shooting its fifth and final season Monday. It’s both a gift and a burden to be able to control the end of series. Many shows are not lucky enough to have a hand in deciding when the end has come.”

The announcement came not long after it was announced that Steven Krueger who plays Josh will be promoted to season regular and TVD alum Candice King, who played Caroline Forbes will be making an appearance in The Originals season premiere. Klaroline shippers are hoping, some demanding, that the series end with Caroline and Klaus together. We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out.

Other news that really left fans disgruntled was the announcement that the season will only be thirteen episodes. It was an issue some had with the end of The Vampire Diaries whose eighth and final season had sixteen episodes. Sixteen may seem like a lot for some shows, but it’s a lot less content compared to the twenty to twenty-two episodes we’ve gotten in previous seasons. The idea of a rushed ending usually doesn’t sit well with fans who want to see the characters’ storylines flushed out and not sloppily wrapped up. Season four ended with the Mikaelsons scattering around the earth to defeat the Hollow and save Hope and Elijah being compelled to forget them all. We can only hope (no pun intended) that our favorite original family gets a decent and happier ending.

During Comic-Con, Julie and the cast mentioned possible wedding bells for Kol and Davina, an Elijah-centric episode, and an eight-year time-jump. Julie also teased that some old faces could be returning before the end of the series. We also got a glimpse of a teenage Hope in a preview that mostly recapped the series but gave us an idea of the main storyline of season five; Hope trying to save and reunite her family. The Originals is set to return as a midseason premiere in Spring of 2018.

How do you feel about the series ending? Me, I’m bummed. I actually like the spin-off series better than I liked The Vampire Diaries.
