Darkhorse Candidates for NBA MVP
There are two players who I think have been slept on for a while now. It’s definitely time to wake up cause these players could be MVP candidates this year.
The first player is Kawhi Leonard. I enjoy watching Kawhi play because he’s as humble a player as you can get. I think he has been vastly overlooked the past years cause the Spurs were considered to be the Big 3’s team (Duncan, Ginobli, and Parker.) Now that the era is over, the new look Spurs look younger, but still hungry.
Leonard will definitely start to prove that this is his team. Let’s also not forget that this man is only 25! He is young and his team just added a great new addition to the team with Pau Gasol. I know the Warriors just acquired KD, but you can never, ever, ever, ever (infinity ever), count the Spurs out. I think Kawhi is a great player, but Greg Popovich should be accounted for a lot of his success. This man is a great coach and his whole team is disciplined and coached well. The Spurs have no arrogance on their teams whatsoever, that’s why they’re successful, cause they play team ball. Let’s not forget that he already has five rings during the Big 3 era. Another one would just cement his way to the Hall of Fame, and as one of the NBA’s all-time greatest coaches. He has Kawhi at another level and the Defensive Player of the Year is headed for another trophy this year.
My other candidate for MVP is Damian Lillard. When he’s not dropping heat in the studio, he’s dropping it over defenders on the court.
D Lill dropped 39 on the Utah Jazz shooting 65 % on 13-of-20 shots. He also shot 66.7% from behind the arc making 4-of-6. I know this is only one game, and we have a long season ahead, but watchout for Lillard. The 26 year-old point guard recently became the face of the Trail Blazers after their good line-up of Aldridge, Batum, and Matthews was suddenly split. Dame still took his Portland team to the playoffs last year where they were defeated by the Warriors in the second round.
Let’s not forget D Lill averaged 19 points his rookie year of the NBA, and won Rookie of the Year unanimously. This was a sign of things to come for this player, who has blossomed into an MVP candidate. When I watch him as a player, I see a point guard who is gifted with scoring and playmaking abilities. He also has a killer mid-range jumper that I’ve sometimes tried to mimic while I’m on the court (lol).
Anywho, look out for D-Lill cause he’s definitely an MVP candidate. Lillard and C.J. are two young players to watch out for. I didn’t expect to see the Blazers in the playoffs last year after the departure of Aldridge, Batum, and Matthews. They pushed Golden State in their playoff battle to five games and the series was closer than the end result. You never know, this team could make some upsets this year in that tough Western Conference with pure scorers like Lillard and McCollum.
I love watching Leonard and McCollum because they come from small schools like Weber State and San Diego State. These two were not # 1 overall picks, but they’ve improved every year to get better. If you’re a sports fan, you love to see the underdogs make it to the top. Steph, Lebron, Westbrook and Durant should make room for these players because they’ll only get better.
On a side note, D-Lill just dropped a rap album and you should definitely go get it. I must say he is better than his other fellow players who had brief rap careers, shoutout to Shaq Diesel, and Ron Artest (now known as Metta World Peace). Much love to you to sport fans and welcome back NBA!!!!
