Darkseid vs Thanos
From the very beginning, MFST’s comic battles have been the epitome of colossal comic clashes. Countless popular characters have been put together to give you what you’ve always wanted to see. You demanded these ferocious face-offs and we gave them to you Joker vs Penguin, Catwoman vs Poison Ivy, Scarecrow vs The Riddler, Harley Quinn vs Duela Dent, Deadpool vs Deathstroke and even Wonder Woman vs Captain Marvel. Even with all these phenomenal fights, today’s throw down is by far one of the most talked about fight since the birth of these two heavy monumentally iconic figures. Literally, these two tower over their adversaries. There has never been a badder villain than one that wears what some might call a dress, or dare I say a skirt, and make it look cool. Both of today’s gladiators travel through their respective universes conquering planets and different species looking for some form of glory. One has been featured several times in the Marvel cinematic universe and the other has been hinted to appear at some point and time in DC’s cinematic extended universe. What happens when one of the The New Gods engages in a life and death with the Titanian Eternal/Deviant Hybrid? Today’s battle is Darkseid vs Thanos.
One thing that is constant between these two conquerors is that throughout their histories in the comic book realm they have caused nothing but devastation and are in love with Death. Let’s see which one of them will be embraced by Death’s warm touch at the end of this battle.
Uxas History (Darkseid)
Darkseid is the tyrannical ruler of the planet Apokolips, with the ultimate goal of conquering the entire universe and eliminating all free will. The story of Darkseid began as a simply cameo (Superman’s Pal Jimmy Olsen #134, Nov. 1970) before making his full appearance (Forever People #1, Feb. 1971) in the world of comic.
At the time of his conception, Darkseid was only introduced in the Forever People series but was really expanded upon later in the New Gods (New Gods #1, Mar. 1971. Which marked Darkseid’s 4th appearance) series. Darkseid was ushered into DC Comics as the most powerful menace that threatened the universe. The story behind the one we now call Darkseid was one that was created in destruction. The New Gods were created in the aftermath of the epic battle of the Old Gods in their fight against evil. The battle of the Old Gods not only cost them their lives but also their planet, but after ions the rubble from the destroyed planet eventually formed into two separate planets and the New Gods were born. One planet was created in the image of Heaven, a lush utopia that had a golden land upon it, called New Genesis. The other was a wasteland of evil that was created in the image of Hell, called Apokolips. New Genesis housed the source of all life for everything called the “Life Equation,” which set in motion Darkseid’s ambitious quest to find the “Anti-Life Equation” which could eliminate life entirely.
Knowing what drives Darkseid will make telling his story easier to understand. Before the methodical monarch became the harbinger of death, he was Uxas. Son of King Yuga Khan and Queen Heggra, second in line for the throne to his brother Drax. After murdering his brother for trying to attain the fabled Omega Force, he took the power for himself and transformed himself into the rock-like being when know today.
Even after this transformation he still hadn’t become Darkseid, Uxas fell in love with a Apokoliptian scientist and sorceress named Suli, with whom he had a son named Kalibak. Shortly after this, Queen Heggra had a lackey Desaad poison her because she felt her son was being influenced by her. Uxas finding out made his heart grow even colder, he had Desaad give his mother the same punishment that she thought was fitting for his lover, and with he finally became the monarch of Apokolips, Darkseid.
Darkseid’s reign of terror had just begun, he had been previously forced into a marriage with Tigra by his mother and had a son Orion (who became his enemy). To complete erase anything his mother had done out of existence, he ordered Tigers to kill their son, who had been switched with Scott Free, son of the Highfather in order to have peace between New Genesis and Apokolips. Not only was this an attempt to establish his dominance as ruler but it had been told in a prophecy that Orion would defeat Darkseid in a catastrophe battle in the fiery Armoghetto of Apokolips.
From torturing the Highfather’s son daily, fighting and trying to assassinate his son, to enhancing his powers to transpose planets to enslave Kryptonian-like superhumans, to defeating the Legion of Super-Heroes. Darkseid has proven himself to be one of the mightiest and most formidable villains in DC continuity. Traveling through time to defy death and finding the “Anti-Life Equation” to eliminate “All Free Will” only adds to the Tale of Darkseid in this latest adaptation of Darkseid in the new 52.
The New 52 version of Darkseid (Justice League #23.1: Darkseid, Sept. 2013) is completely different, Uxas grew up as a farmer that hated the deities because they cared more for themselves than anything else. Uxas was so enraged that he traveled and climbed their mountain and as they slept he played on their insecurities and tricked them into a Great War. As they lay beaten and battered from the war, he killed them one by one (as Kronos did in Greek Mythology) and stole their powers before destroying his planet and creating Apokolips as Darkseid. In the New 52 there are only one set of New Gods in the Fourth World that extends throughout all 52 multiverses. After the creation of Apokolips, Darkseid’s reign of terror continued to go from planet to planet and multiverse to multiverse. He eventually took free will from Earth-2 after the deaths of Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman it seems as if Darkseid’s rule would go unopposed until he was pushed back by the Justice League from Prime Earth (Justice League #4-6, Dec. 21st, Jan. 25th, Feb. 15th 2011-2012). Darkseid has demonstrated time after time that his world is law and he is willing to do whatever it is to take everything from everyone to have complete control.
New 52 Darkseid’s Abilities/Powers
Darkseid as the New God that tricked and slaughtered the Old Gods has become one of the most powerful villain in DC history, his only know weakness is Radion, the toxin substance that affects New Gods. His abilities and powers are so vast that it is not only hard to list them all but the extent to which they can be used, such as:
New God Physiology:
- Superhuman Strength
- Superhuman Speed
- Superhuman Durability
- Superhuman Stamina
- Immunity to Disease
- Omega Beams
- Avatar Creation
- Mind Control
- Energy Manipulation
- Matter Manipulation

- Indomitable Will
Inspired by Jack Kirby’s creation (Metron then later on Darkseid) Jim Statlin brought Thanos to life (Ironman #55, Feb. 1973) and changed Marvel Comics forever. Ever since the day he was born The Mad Titan was being molded into what we have today. Thanos’s mother tried to kill him at birth, because of his Deviants gene which gave home the physical appearance of the Eternals’ cousin race. Thanos was born on Saturn’s moon, Titan and was the child of Eternals Mentor, A’Lars and Sui-San. As an outcast within his own race Thanos was consistently shunned and changed his mentality toward life. As a child in his school years Thanos was a pacifist and only played with his brother Eros(Starfox) and his pets. Later in his adolescence he had become fascinated with nihilism and death which lead to his worshiping and eventually falling in love with the physical embodiment of death in female form, Mistress Death.
Thanos was so enamored with his love of Death that he took drastic measures to become stronger so he could appease his love. By augmenting his physical strength and powers mystically and artificially which helped him surpass all other Titanian Eternals. He has even gone as far as to murder his family for Misteress Death even after specifically creating that new life for himself. This fascination lead to Thanos’s ambition and desire for conquest but his love was not one-sided. Death was attracted to Thanos for the action he had taken, Thanos stole one of his people’s starships and traveled to other star systems to recruit soldiers, mercenaries, and malcontents for a private army. With a small fleet, he dropped nuclear devices on his home world Titan, killing thousands of his people, including his mother Sui-San. Declaring himself ruler of Titan, before setting his sights on Earth.
Thanos started seeking universal power and traveled to earth in search of the Cosmic Cube. he inevitably found and used the cosmic cube but the power was taken from him when the cube was destroyed so he continuing his search for the soul gems to attain ultimate power. During this transition Thanos devises a plan to siphon off Adam Warlock’s Soul Gem and combine its power with the other Infinity Gems to create a weapon capable of destroying a star. Thanos is momentarily halted but upon his resurrection starts collecting the gems again which lead to the creation of the Infinity Gauntlet (Infinity Gauntlet #1, July 1991).
Thanos obsession with death has lead him to easily earn him the rank of “Earth-Ender and Reality-Ender” from the Nova core. Over the course of Thanos life he has destroyed planet’s such as Rigel-3, he created the embodiment of “Rot” with Death itself, he has destroyed half the universe, He has compiled a list and collected the DNA of all villains and heroes in the universe and with help from Odin, Thanos knocked Galactus off his feet.
It seems as if his power knows no bounds, he has done just about everything you can in the Marvel universe. The question now is how will he hold up in his next battle?
A being that literally loves and has devoted himself to death is already a force to be reckoned. Thanos has meditated and bionically manipulated his body through way of sorcery and augmentation, that along with his Titan/Deviant hybrid genetics makes him the most dangerous thing in all the cosmos. With powers that know no bounds Thanos is almost undefeatable with powers and abilities such as:
- Superhuman Strength
- Superhuman Stamina
- superhuman Speed
- Nigh Invulnerability
- Accelerated Healing Factor
- Superhuman Reflexes
- Superhuman Agility
- Energy Control
- Matter Control
- Curse Casting
- Energy manipulation
- Matter Manipulation
- Super- Genius Intelligence
- Skilled Unarmed Combatant
New 52 Darkseid vs Thanos
Thanos and Darkseid have not only been some of my favorite villains throughout comic book history but they have been so widely accepted as the big bad for their respective universes that it was only natural to have The Mad Titan fight the God of Evil. I see this battle starting in only one place, Apokolips,
after months of failed assassinations, infiltration and schemes, Thanos wants to have a psychological advantage over Darkseid so he has is army invade the tyrants planet. We know that both Darkseid and Thanos use strategy to overwhelm and conquer but since this will inevitably end in a stalemate both, after a loss in numbers they deem unacceptable, withdraw their forces to engage in direct combat.
Before we move on, our two reality ending evildoers share similar skills, for this battle there will be no use of the Infinity Gauntlet or Stasis Rifle, the “Anti-Life Equation” or Radion. These to have comparable abilities such as: Superhuman Strength, Speed, Agility, Reflexes, Stamina, Durability, Immortality, Immunity to Disease, Levitation, Teleportation, Matter/Energy/Size Manipulation, Healing Factor and both are highly skilled at hand to hand combat and are among, if not, the smartest in their universes. This battle would come down to Darkseid’s Omega Effect. Thanos at his best is of average speed, strength, agility, reflexes of an average Titan, even though he has bionic implants and mystical upgrades I don’t think without aid he could win against Darkseid. Even though Thanos has look into the Infinity Well and knows the “secrets” of the universe he still has his judgment clouded by his love of death, which Darkseid could use to his advantage.
Thanos uses his throne to teleport to the ground of Apokolips, as he sits in the royal seat he simply smiles. Thanos menacing laugh echos throughout the planet and yells, “Darkseid, the God of Evil, the Mighty Lord of Apokolips! Show yourself before I, Thanos, the last of his kind, the ruler, the conquerer whose grasp reaches the far ends of the universe. I have come to eliminate you from existence to appease my love, Mistress Death!” As Thanos echoes are about to die down, Darkseid appears out of a boom tube, hovering over the ground of Apokolips. Darkseid says, “The Mad Titan, Thanos, I have heard a slight utterance of your name but you dares to set foot upon my planet? You maybe trying to please your love for Death, but I command it. Now, you die!” After Darkesid’s proclamation, he fires his Omega Beams, one toward Thanos directly and the other at his throne. Thanos leaps out of his throne to strike Darkseid as it blows up behind him. Darkseid opens his arms and grabs Thanos as he is about to strike him. Thanos has three primary weaknesses that Darkseid could exploit to win this battle. His inability to fly, to teleport without his throne and his obsession with death (typically causes him to lose sight of the fight before him or causes him to subconsciously lose battles). Darkseid is perfectly composed in fights no matter what happens, can teleport without the aid of a vehicle and can fly so even if he was couldn’t teleport he could fly through the void of space. Most of their similarities show they are almost evenly match and the match should come close if not to a stalemate but it comes down to an emotional or mental flaw. I feel Thanos could lose sight and be enraged by Darkseid and make a mistake that could have Darkseid teleport him into the void of space and leave him as a temporary win. Know both our combatants this would be a fight to the death and Darkseid kills because his has to not solely for the joy so he would end up imprisoning Thanos is a mental hell of never being able to please or see death again. Under this type of mental manipulation Thanos might not recover which would make him easy for Darkseid to go in for the kill.
My thoughts on this battle lead me to my decision of Darkseid winning, because of his superior composure, intelligence and his unfulfilled thirst for conquest. If you would like me to do another Darkseid vs Thanos battle where the Infinity Gauntlet, Radion, “Anti-Life Equation” or Stasis Rifle are used let me know. That being said we at MFST want to hear from you, you can do this in one of two ways. You can quickly take our poll below or write me in the comments section at the bottom of this page. We love hearing other thoughts and engaging in conversations with other fans of the comic book medium. I feel a strong case could be made for Thanos to have come out victorious, what would happen if he had the Infinity Gauntlet? Whatever the outcome I feel like any version of this battle is amazing and what we want as fans. Remember you can purchase a Darkseid or Thanos shirt below to support your favorite villain from today’s battle.
