Darren McFadden out two months due to broken elbow
The injury was announced yesterday out of Irving Texas, an incident which sounded sketchy at first. Sometime over Memorial Day weekend, Darren McFadden reportedly said he was at home when the injury occurred. McFadden tried saving his cell phone from falling to the ground, and instead ended up cracking his right elbow. Cowboys running back coach Gary Brown stated Tuesday during mini camp that he saw McFadden practicing through the pain before the decision was made that McFadden would need surgery. McFadden stated that he continued to practice with the injury because he didn’t know the extent of the injury. A physical from Monday revealed the fracture.
McFadden underwent surgery Tuesday morning, but the fact that he practiced with his swollen elbow impressed numerous teammates. Jason Witten was one of the guys who came out and said, “He’s a pretty tough dude to practice through that after he noticed it last week.”. For not starting last season, McFadden had a solid season coming in as the fourth ranked running back racking up 1,089 scrimmage yards and 1,417 overall for getting the start during mid-season.
As training camp creeps closer, more reps will be available to the other options at running back. Alfred Morris was signed in the offseason and seemed to be McFadden’s back up going into the season. That was until the Cowboys took Ezekiel Elliott fourth overall in the draft which shook up their running back core. Darius Jackson now seems to have a bigger role as this is a time for him to take advantage of an unfortunate situation, trying to move up in the roster. Lance Dunbar also remains in the picture as he tries to have a bounce-back season after suffering an ACL tear early in the season last year that put him on the shelf.
Brown would go onto say that losing a guy like McFadden for the time being is devastating, as the younger guys, especially Elliott, looked towards McFadden for “guidance and leadership”.
Jason Garrett said he expects McFadden to be ready before the season starts, and went on to say that there’s a chance he could play in the season opener on Sept 11th against the Giants. Whatever the time frame is that McFadden needs to recover, it’s has to affect his role in some way when he returns, as the competition at RB during training camp now dramatically changes.
