David Price, 30, one of the top two arms available in free agency alongside Zach Greinke is no longer available as the southpaw inked a seven-year, $217 million contract with the Boston Red Sox. Price who will join his fourth team in the last two years joins a Boston starting rotation that ranked 24th with a 4.39 ERA across baseball. The ace supported an 18-5 record, 2.45 ERA, 225 SO over 220.1 innings in 32 games split between Detroit and Toronto in 2015. Including going 9-1 with a 2.30 after being acquired by the Toronto leading them to the playoffs for the first time in 22 years. Price is exactly what the Red Sox needed, to go along with their revamped bullpen, and youth movement that they rode to end the year.

New manager, and Price’s former manager in Detroit, Dave Dombrowski made a bold move earlier this offseason when he swung a trade with the San Diego Padres for closer Craig Kimbrel to solidify their bullpen. Now D0mbrowski makes another swing with the fences, handing the left-hander the largest contract for a SP in history. Price is the ace the Red Sox desperately desired last year. Price joins a starting staff as the ace, and will be followed by Clay Buchholz, Eduardo Rodriguez who has played strong and looks to take the next step, Rick Porcello a former teammate of Price whose an innings eater, and looked as if he put it together to end the year, rounded out by Wade Miley who is a solid No.5 starter.

Boston has made big noise this offseason once again, afterspending freely in free agency a year ago. Boston signed Hanley and Pablo to contracts combined north of $183 million, and this year makes another big signing with Prices 7-year, $217 million deal. 7 years to guy on the wrong side of 30 is risky, but lefty aces come at a premium and look Price to make good on this deal as he’s well accustomed to the AL East and looks to push another team into the postseason.
